I've only ever contracted with fellow Americans, but obviously because of the way the system is set up a lot of times they're getting supplies from Home Depot or some other big chain. I once drove about 20mi to get some custom 2 pane glass cut to spec -- seems it's often the low-volume stuff combined with customer service that winds up attracting me.
