Several years back I worked at fairly large family owned design and machining company that was bought out by Mega Corp Inc and I was talking to the guy who was the assistant scheduling/crib/shipping manager who had worked his way up thru the company over almost 20 years from the prep dept into machining and on to the front office.

When his boss was moved to another position under new management, he figured he’d take over the department but the company told that wasn’t going to happen, as he didn’t have a piece of paper with “management degree” on it, so they hired some wet-behind-the-ears 21 year old fresh out of college with literally no work experience who didn’t even know WTF an end-mill was, and made him his boss….

Here is the real problem: Smart people do dumb shit without thinking. Most go into college for two years wandering aimlessly through life. Everyone thinks they are the main character of a romantic comedy and success will fall out of the sky into their lap. When the two years pass and they finally need to choose a direction, they often pick something that is either easy or has some use in a job-field, but is not intensive. California State College's are like $2.6k a semester (when I attended 5 years ago).

So it was around 5k per year to go to a 4 year college.. I transfered from a CC where it was like $500/year.
