Trident does suffer from a reliability issue though. Sure its great if you are the USA and can launch hundreds of the things but we can't.

Alternatives include, bombs, cruise missiles (usable from subs) or a potentially re designed system of ballistic missiles.

I'm not an expert. But you would probably be looking at some drop in capability for the saved cost. The point is though is whats the point in being over capable. The USSR no longer exists and we are no longer a world power. Just having nukes doesn't fix that.

Trident is currently running more or less on minimum spec you are right.

We reduced the amount of warheads each sub carries and we only have 4 subs to play with.

The reason we can't really modernise is that the US produces and maintains the missiles for us. So we would have to get them on board, and well, the special relationship isnt always as special as we might hope.

As for other threats. China and India pose mostly economic threats. I don't think they particularly intend on invading us, if they want to end us they could just crash our economy. Having nuclear weapons won't really stop that from happening.

If China for example however got a bit pushy we could just use cruise missiles fired from Astute Class subs that have been modified carry nuclear warheads. We could still maintain a permanent deterrent without Trident.

I think using nukes to tackle Islam might be a bit overkill


Trident is a very capable system. But its a bit too capable when we lack serious opponents and we ourselves are pretty much reduced to a rather gobby nation in the north sea on the verge of collapse.
