My theory:
>8 - 12 years later
>Southern European states fall into big debnt
>EURO bank liquidity too low to save them
>Germany imposes harsher policies
>They refuse, and threaten to leave.
>Greece is the first to go from internal revolution (decade of austerity)
>EU imposes their own financial advisors to run indebted countries central bank and finance department
>One or two killed, resulting in massive security appartus to protect these foreign advisors
>Germany sends in special forces to save their advisors when shit hits the fan
>Mission goes horribly wrong and the rest is (future) history
