Derivatives are things like futures, options, swaps, cash-for-difference, debt securities, and shit like that.
I know to trade in futures you don't buy the whole contract which may be e.g. around $120k for an s&p mini future, or $240k for a globex eurodollar contract. You only need to put up a much smaller amount of margin cash to afford the trade in case it moves against your favour, several thousand $ for s&p mini or just a few hundred for globex eurodollar futures.
If you take just the eurodollar derivatives, 14.2M open contracts on CME, and multiply it by the average contract value, you'll get a "big scary number" around say 3.5 trillion dollars.
Now this is just one class of contract, a mere fraction of all global derivatives. But it's meaningless to count because at no point ever is there $3.5 trillion that is owed to anybody, even in a collapse, because that's not how fucking derivatives work. That money wasn't "real" to begin with. Same is true for any contract between two parties to have one pay the other the difference of some underlying asset in cash.

I suspect a lot of the derivatives scary news articles stem from someone calculating meaningless dollar values for derivatives, adding them together, and writing about how they think the whole world economy is dancing on the knife's edge because some large meaningless number is greater than the amount of cash and bank deposits in the world. Big fucking deal. I so far haven't been convinced that I ought to be scared of derivative exposure.

It's a tough situation because on the one hand you have a large number of people who thought it was HAPPENING in 2008 and even though it really wasn't good, life still went on as it always does. So now people have a tendency to think any significantly bearish prognosticator is full of shit, even when they point out obvious solid reasons why it's unlikely that we won't see a crash of some dimension and probably sooner than later.

It's all about the timing, and you're right that the whole trick of the financial system is for the insiders to figure out what's up before the plebs. But I take a slightly different view of MSM coverage. I suspect that this is more a combination of a preparing a narrative and rattling the cage against Trump.

I get the sense that Jim Rogers has made most of his money as an "investing personality". Also, he's been calling for China's economy to implode for over a decade now, and if you had invested in expectation of that you'd have come out a loser, I imagine. I never said they would go to 0. But the fact that they are massively overvalued in terms of basic asset-evaluation is undeniable. They are the most obvious bubble I have ever witnessed in my lifetime. Their current value is not decided through their inherent value (basically only name recognition of a specific crypto as the technology is completely unproprietary), but solely on the believe that they will rise in value, which in term is solely based on the knowledge that other people think that they will rise in value ad infinitum. The point of ridiculousness has been crossed long ago.

PS: the creation of hundred's of new crypto currencies every day is 100% equivalent to the dotcom IPO's back in the day. They go up because they have the word "crypto" in their name and people know crypto's will always go up when released to the market. Sound familiar?
