I'm pretty sure that the metal just instantly smushed the living shit out of them.
They're most likely saying "drowned" because they were found under water.
Also it probably looks better than saying that they had to scrape what was left of the bodies off the warped plating and are now having to identify the bodies based on teeth.

Is there an animation of both ships course plots?

It does seem a little weird that this enormous freighter would make a turn like that.

But what I don't get is that even my fathers sailboat has a radar system that will blare a warning if any object gets too close to the boat.

That's pretty standard on any boat doing long distance offshore cruising. You tend to zone out on a sailboat and you're not going to be staring at the radar constantly at 4:00 in the morning, so you have that warning system that will alert you.

How come the Fitz didn't have a system like this? I mean, I guarantee you it did, but why wasn't it on?

It is not clear if the freighter turned before or after the collision.

There is an AIS aboard the Fitzgerald but that data is classified and will probably not be released until the naval board of inquiry deems it be released.

However with this said something stinks here with the behavior of this merchant ship originally I thought the Fitz probably was at fault but the AIS data from the merchant indicates otherwise and we know the Phillipines has an Islam problem right now.

If they tried to manoeuvrer on time and with full speed, it would have avoided the collision. But they didn't so they had nearly 7 minutes to raise the alarm and brace for collision or at the very least assemble the crew on deck.

Man it would be interesting if it turned out that some muds were driving the cargo ship.
Still even if that cargo ship tried to purposely hunt the American ship, if a modern naval vessel with state of the art radar, gps and other sensor tech can't see a ship the size of a high rise building approaching, there's something criminally wrong there.
As in criminal incompetence on the captain's part.

Large vessel collisions are not uncommon on the high seas. Especially at night and/or bad conditions.

And that cargo hauler had the edge in displacement during the collision. A Burke would get pretty fucked up in such a collision.

They would have been locked in. I did 7 years in the Navy (not US), Watertight bulk heads are closed, sealed, and reinforced when a compartment is flooded.

This was most likely a series of incompetence. Helmsman could have maneuvered. Crew could have been warned. Crew should have been at DC stations.

I'm not surprised DESU. The US military has a rep for being notoriously incompetent among allied nations.

The military does its best to spare the public and (more importantly) the families of deceased soldiers as much of the gory details as possible. One time in commie Poland a ship under construction was behind schedule so the people in charge sent in a huge number of workers to try and catch up. This was such an uncoordinated desperate effort that it ended up causing a huge fire on deck, and twenty workers ended up trapped inside.

They managed to survive inside for several hours (they continued to strike the surface with hammers so their location was known) and their colleagues wanted to cut them a way out but the people in charge brought in armed police to stop them because they didn't want the ship damaged further.

In the end the 20 workmen were cooked alive before the fire was contained.

Less than 50 hours after the maresk Memphis hoax.

Webb claimed there was a nuclear weapon in a container aboard the maresk Memphis a container ship docked in Charleston harbor. This triggered a response from the USCG NEST and FBI.

They searched the ship and closed the port but no weapon was found. Webb has been charged and is in custody the fbi is investigating him further.

But the timing is very concerning yes. I really hope this wasn't intentional somehow.

I'm not a Navyfag so I don't understand how this is usually handled. Is the CO/XO looking at jail time? Or is he just going to be demoted and his career will never go anywhere unless a world war breaks out?
>>
>>130365418
It's not that uncommon for people to break. 5 people from my intake attempted suicide before their first real posting. 1 guy hid in his quarters for 3 days, then flee'd across country. He was found by the NP's several months later trying to sell his parent's belongings to buy a plane ticket. He'd grown a beard and dyed his hair blue.

We had one guy dive off the quarter-deck and swim ashore during slipping because his wife was threatening to suicide and take the kids with her if he deployed, and he couldn't get support from anywhere in his divisional chain to not deploy.

The military has a unique way of forcing people into desperate situations. All it takes is an NCO deciding he doesn't like how your face looks, and your life is hell for the next 8-12 months. The military is also incredibly clique-y. Sometimes people just get completely ostracised and isolated for no real reason. Imagine the worst kind of school bullying, except you can't stand up for yourself, you have nowhere to run, and you're locked in a steel box floating in the ocean for months at a time with your tormentors.

You obviously don't know what happens when the collision alarm is sounded. Sailors are taught to brace, so at most you would have gotten a few groggy sailors holding on to their racks with their knees bent, crouching in place. They wouldn't have left the berthing.
>>
>>130366188
I could see something like this happening. A bunch of high ranking officers do "fact finding" and pour through logs and shit.

I don't know how shit works up on the bridge, but I was in the plant and I screwed up once by removing a lubeoil thermometer but it also pulled out this sheath. So when they fired everything up it squirted a jet of lubeoil out. Wasn't even that big of a deal, they just shut everything off. But oh fucking boy, they had the Master Chief and the Department Head who was also a captain with all these junior officers do a two day fact finding to figure out my EXACT actions, pouring through tech manuals, and they wanted to smash me for not following the exact order of operations or whatever. Over some lube oil that squirted out. We cleaned it up with rags.
>>
>>130364282

> I mean, I guarantee you it did, but why wasn't it on?

A guess, their alarm system was only designed for military situations with vastly higher speeds of approach and accelerations. With no one thinking to spec a civvy mode.

Which would mean it would just keep blaring non stop near a port.

>>130367158
The problem is complacency. It's the biggest problem throughout the entire Navy, in my opinion. People on watch don't fucking pay attention. It was a huge problem being a mechanic because people would "blaze" their logs. You're supposed to take readings every hour on equipment, and keep an eye on the water level in the bilge. The bilge is basically a giant drip-pan at the bottom of the ship that fills up with water and needs to be drained. Well people just fucking chill and write in the previous number that was listed the last hour and hang out under the vents and bullshit. So multiple people doing a day's worth of logs don't monitor the water level and just write in the previous number of 2", and then you actually have someone go do their fucking job and realize that the water level has risen up to like three fucking feet and is threatening to submerge something electrical. Or they don't monitor temperatures or pressures and something gets dangerously out of spec.

I'd imagine it's the same thing up on the bridge. Some second class petty officer too busy flirting with the boat goat and not paying attention because that's what he's done for two years and nothing happened. Now you have a seven dead sailors and damaged ship.

Between the bridge crew and CIC, I would personally put more blame on CIC. They are supposed to maintain COMPLETE situational awareness. They are the ones that tell the bridge which direction to turn half the time for fuck's sake! If it was dark, the bridge would have been relying on updates and orders from CIC, not flying by the seat of their pants.

That said, I'm sure there's plenty of blame to go around on this one.

Agreed. However, this is nothing to the casualties that will occur if we ever get into a naval war with a near-peer adversary that actually has a navy. A carrier strike group getting fucked up by submarines and long-range hypersonic anti-ship missiles is probably what it is going to take for the Navy to pull its head out of its ass, turn off the sexual assault powerpoint, and actually fix itself. My prediction is many more useless deaths to come before things even start to get fixed in the "World's Finest Navy".

Standard Operator Checks. Daily checks of all equipment to make sure everything is functioning correctly. FCO checks would involve comms checks on all channels. Making sure main battery trains, elevates, loads, rams and sends firing pulse correctly. Also testing of FCR, and missile safeties.

Training the gun when pers are on deck is a huge no-no. They're giant hydraulic monstrosities that move way faster than you think they can, and can crush a human with no problem.

We had a chief (E7) get electrocuted to death while in port and they didn't pay his family because the tech manual wasn't within his arm's reach, so their reasoning was that he wasn't following the steps and that led to his death. The electricians called him in because they couldn't figure it out and he was out celebrating his one year anniversary. Came in and got killed. The crew raised money for his funeral since the Navy jewed his family.

SWIC, TAO, OOD, JOOD, NAV, QMOW, helmsman, lookouts port, starboard, fore, and aft.

73 radar has a collision alarm. So does the 67. Not to mention ECDIS.

Lots of things to tell the crew what was going on.

They could have been trail shafting which would have limited their pickup in speed however that it usually done when you are in wide open ocean, and not in a busy channel.

Lots of things went wrong on the Fitz. From a sailors perspective. The navigation route of the Crystal was odd too. It could be that they were spinning circles to kill time due to being ahead of schedule for their next port of call.

>This is the most basic nautical shit.
Is that some American shit or something? You're meant to avoid the ship on your starboard side, so if you're getting rammed on the starboard, you've probably made a mistake.

>When two power-driven vessels are crossing, the vessel which has the other on the starboard side must give way and avoid crossing ahead of her.[11][page needed] The saying is "If to starboard red appear, 'tis your duty to keep clear".[18] "...Act as judgement says is proper: port or starboard, back or stop her."

From the pictures, it appears that berthings 1 and 2 were close to the area that took the damage. Berthing 1 is on the 3rd deck and berthing 2 is below it on the 4th deck. When i left the Fitz in 2015 the supply dept was in b1 and combat systems and weapons departments were in b2. We had just done a major berthing switch that year, prior to that b2 was the female berthing.

Slipping and berthing can be pretty dangerous.

Also many ports have limited berths, and are pre-booked based on time. This includes tug boats which are pretty much a necessity for any large ship.

If they'd arrived ahead of schedule, they would have had to just kill time which would explain why thy were doing circles.
>>
>>130369011
How did you get the implication I thought the Navy is better? At least in the merchant marine I have my own cabin, half the year off and a thicc paycheck to offset the retardation. Plus every single ex Navy engineering officer I've met has been a fucking useless mongoloid and I'm thankful for the privilege of being able to walk off the ship and get fired if things become too retarded.

The ocean is safe enough unless your captain is a moron with no spine who decides to sail into a hurricane because of company orders, a ship that's properly built to spec with a competent crew is extremely safe. That is until companies start jewing out on ships, crewing and safety equipment. And this is with top tier shipping companies. Ive heard enough stories on how filth tier Greek, Slavic and Chinese companies are.

>>
>>130369348
Probably no berths to anchor, or their schedule only needed to be delayed for an hour or two. Dropping anchor takes some time to execute and make sure it holds. At that time of day most of the crew is in the rack. I'd venture to say that the Philippines ship had their B team on watch at 2 am.

Our cooks used to make whatever the fuck they wanted. These niggers got so lazy they started putting out a "potato bar". No meat, no vegetables. Just french fries, tatertots, and other potato based products. It was either that or the flips would whip up some weird jungle mix with rice and fruit. It was awful, until some senior chief walked through and asked what the fuck they were doing. Apparently they have to follow exact guidelines and not supposed to just throw shit together.

When you're even a few miles out from port, even worrying about collisions is rare unless you intentionally got close together for some reason.
The cargo ship turned into the naval vessel, by the navigation data.
We don't know why they were alongside, but they were and the Nip helmsman fucked up.

same thing happened in the 80's when the USS Dallas ran ashore in the bahamas. My dad was about ten, living on AUTEC, my grandmother was a hair dresser there, and apparently a nuclear submarine ran aground, marines on deck with M16's in full security mode, a helicopter came from the base and the captain was "drunk"/critically injured. story at the time was that the captain had a bit too much to drink and commanded his helmsman to give up control with threat of court martial, and crashed the sub. the tinfoil version (my fathers) is that they have a Sub pen that is reached by an underwater tunnel and the captain realized he wasn't going to make it, so he pulled up and hit full reverse. ended up beaching himself in front of my dad and ten other fisher men.
