I have no problem with consumption taxes like this, soda is trash and if you make a personal choice to consume it and destroy your health it should also disqualify you from receiving any kind of public funded healthcare.
>>
>>130357624
I don't mind private businesses making profit. I object to government hurting private businesses by stacking exorbitant taxes on products for the specific goal of ensuring that people won't buy that product. If the government doesn't want people smoking or drinking sodas then it can just try to make it illegal. But trying adding on taxes to jack up the price so people won't buy the product? That's bullshit.

I keep waiting for liberals to start passing gun taxes. "Oh we didn't make guns illegal. You can still buy all the guns you want. We just put a $20,000 tax on each one you buy."

Fuck that.

Sweet beverage are a cancer for society. Fruit juice isn't any better. Even your all natural juice is extremely bad for your health because fructose is as terrible as sucralose if it's digested as free sugar, and it'S always free sugar in juices since the fibers of the fruits are destroyed during pressing.

Basically drink water and you'll be healthy, if you want fruits, eat the things, don't drink juice.
>>
>>130357578
They'd still be getting tax money regardless of how few people actually consume it.
>>
>>130356394
This won't lower incentive to buy soda.

A fatty doesn't care if soda is 5% more expensive. They want soda. This is just another tax with a bullshit excuse to make it seem reasonable.

Let's not forget that this state is close to bankruptcy.
>>
>>130358044
>the stuff made from concentrate (which rely on added sweeteners to make it taste like 100% juice)

Fruit juice concentrates rarely have "extra" sugars in them. There's no need. They just mix less water in.

You seem to be very ignorant of what "concentration" means.

When you concentrate a fruit juice, you evaporate water from it, leaving like 90% sugar.

You don't need to ADD sugar. Just add back less water than a real fruit would have.

>>
>>130358804
this is only true purely in healthcare costs.

its not true in overall productivity and contribution to society.
>>
>>130356394
The argument goes like this:
The diet of inner-city residents is horrible and is the likely cause of obesity and diabetes, with which the public health system becomes overburdened.
The obvious answer, since an extraordinarily high percentage of the area is on food stamps, is to eliminate it from the permissible items. That cannot be achieved without an act of congress, since it's a federal program.
So, they've taken the path of applying a prohibitively high tax on the items.
Now, here's the good part: the city cannot collect the soda tax on sales via food stamps, since that violates the agreement.

What they've just done is to create a black market for soda, whereby only food stamp recipients can buy soda at cost.

Chicago area grocery store manager here

Right now the tax is just for cook county (Chicago is in cook county)and it's a penny an once. The state is now talking about adding their tax on top of it. It's a tax on anysweetened liquids and isn't at least 51% dairy. Most of the pop delivery companies in the area are preparing for the worst.a lot of people are worried about their jobs.

Fuck this state. The pieces of shit in Springfield haven't given us a budget in over 2 years.

The schools are being forced to take out loans against the money the state should have given them.

Our roads are falling apart and costing us money since there's no budget the federal government can't give us federal matching funds.

This is all on top of one of the highest sales tax in the country

Typical retard that doesn't understand the economics of taxation.
Taxes affect both the consumer and producer.
Subsidies affect both the consumer and producer.
Taxation of corn syrup drinks lower the money received by the producer (farmers) and increases the amount paid by the consumers (fatties).
Subsidies of corn increase the money received by the producer (farmers) and decrease the money paid by the consumer (fatties by corn syrup drinks).
So no wealth redistribution is taking place.

I'm calling bullshit.

Drinking soda is going to convert to fat as much as eating lasagna with a side order of 1lb of french fries.

I gained almost 20 pounds back in 2010. It was from eating tons of pastries and 4 course meals.

Eating lots of yeasty foods, such as bread along with cheese & noodles will make you fat.

This bullshit that cane sugar makes you fat is a jewish lie.

Cane sugar is a simple carb which burns fast regardless of how much you eat. It's why you have sugar highs and downs. Because it's a fat breakdown carb, unlike other carbs such as french bread or doughnuts.

This whole idea that oreos can make you fat is bullshit... There is no real heavy nutritional value to cane sugar or chocolate.

If you were to eat buckets of chocolate every day, you would die from starvation. You would lose weight because your body needs more than just cane sugar and cocoa.

If I have to hear one more fucking thing about what is and isn't REAL fat I'm going to kill myself.

I lost weight by eating less calories than I expended every day. I would often have a can of soda, knowing that meant I'd have to eat slightly less during my meals.

I gained weight by eating more calories than I expended every day.

Soda happens to be a pretty big source of calories. Calories in, calories out.

End my life.

Regular fruit is full of sugar. However it is also typically full of fiber, so you can't eat too much of it in one sitting.

However when you turn it into juice, you can now drink like 30 apples instead of eating them and get mega sugar dose.

However IL is not passing this for people "health", they desperate need money and are just making shit up to get more money as next week their state bonds will be declared junk status.

Note, NY also doesn't care about your health. They need money so fuck it, tax sugar and then drop propaganda in the media they're just looking out for your best interest. In reality they have billions of debt to worry about from blowing it on democrat bullshit.

Exactly... try eating a bag of oreos when you are hungry... later that day you will feel drained, tired... because you didn't give your body much of anything to work with.

It's funny when you see these fatties talking about staying on a diet.

> I don't eat chocolate anymore, I don't drink soda anymore

But they pound down a fat cheeseburger with french fries, a cup of friend, a glass of milk and a few vegetables.

> only sugar makes me fat, so I'll eat this whole bucket of lasagna and potatoes instead.

>>130362560

> I guarantee you're only going to find vegan skeletons.

this... the main reason you see fat people on vegan diets is because they don't tell you the meals they snuck in to their diet at 12 am going through the drive through.

98% of fatso people are fat for a reason, they lie to themselves, they lie to the people who put them on diets.

they have a mental disorder, they are addicted to food and shove it down their fat mouths as their self medication method.
>>
>>130362560
Not my fault you dont understand simple human metabolism. You probably believe in free energy machines as well.
The reason you wont see fat vegans is because of the fiber. Ingesting this causes you to feel fuller and doesnt allow you to eat more. My point still stands though, if you eat excess vegetable calories you will gain weight. It is really simple. Even a simp like you should get it.
>>

Most fat people I know live off of restaurants. They don't cook for themselves much at all.

They have no idea but the reason restaurant food taste so good is because it's loaded with everything that makes them fat and unhealthy, which are the ingredients to making an outstanding taste in food.

Heavy salts, heavy oils, heavy pure fats, heavy fucking everything.

>>
>>130363269
Actually it takes more energy to eat and digest some uncooked foods and dare I say foods with low to no nutritional value.
Ramen with a flavor packet is not actual food. It dehydrates you because of the high salt content and hardly has any nutrition in it.

It seems fairly simple to me. Even if some foods have energy content in it, if it's not readily absorbable you may pass it or spend more energy and work extracting it than you get out of it.
>>
>>130361587
You're argument is based on the flawed assumption that both the government and the free market are equally efficient at redistributing money. This isn't the case. The government is less beholden to market forces than the general economy. The government can and does force money to flow in directions that the economy wouldn't normally allow. Because of this the impact of taxes and subsidies generally outweighs the impact of the markets response to those taxes and subsidies.

In other words the market response to the tax won't completely negate it's effect on fatties, and the market response to the subsidy won't completely negate it's effect on the farmers.

You need to think deeper. Don't look at things so superficially.
>>

The market response to the tax won't completely negate the effect of the subsidy and the market response to the subsidy won't completely negate the effect of the tax. The market will resist and blunt the governments efforts but it won't entirely stop it.

Hey half a billion, easy money! I'm sure there will be no unintended consequences.
>>
>Taxing more than absolutely necessary
My boy Calvin Coolidge would have something to say about this. If the government wants more spending money then maybe it should actually draw up a budget and figure out how much it needs. Then it can kindly stop spending so much fucking money.
>>
I havent heard anything recently about this country.

That's why I learned to roll my own. Costs a fuckload less.

It's retarded. Fat people will always be fat, soda has nothing to do with it.

A 12oz soda only has about 150 calories in it. I drink soda regularly and only weigh about 130lbs. It doesn't make you fat by itself.

We need something more radical to curb obesity. Not sure what, though.

The horrid spacing, the color of the shelves, the walls, and the spic in the middle suggest that it is a "bodega". A Mexican run ministore. They import 3 litter bottles from Mexico. Very popular there.

I'm not a fatty, so I really don't care.
Also, this is one of the few taxes where you actually have a choice.
Our national water tax is a fucking sneak thief scam though. I pay for water, I pay for maintenance on that water. The fact that i have to pay a tax and now because of California i have to pay another new tax (storm drain tax) is bullshit.
>>
don't care. haven't really consumed the stuff since I was a kid

They'd look like shit but they wouldn't get American-grade fat.
>>
>>130356394
Do it. Do it federally. Soda is a luxury item, it is not a necessity and it has no real nutritional value.

If you impose a tax, and then a subsidy in the same market of equal size, the net effect will be the same as competitive equilibrium.
The only argument that is economically valid is that technically the market for corn and the market for corn syrup beverages are different markets (albeit similar). However that is a very pedantic approach and omits the general idea.
See pic related for an understanding of the supply and demand.
To say "hurr durr the government is above the market" is extremely foolish because the economics of taxation fundamentally has already accounted for the power of the government.
All I see here is hand waving. No actual economics.

>>130358499
It's not necessarily that the tax isn't applied correctly. It's more that the government sees any increase in income as a reason to increase spending even if already in the red.
>>

Why not just tax fat people for being fat instead of taxing something that anyone can get? People that want soda now have to pay more because of Fat people.
