I work 40+ hours a week making $9.30 and still don't make enough money to move out on my own. I'd get a roommate, but I don't see any of my friends as the reliable/responsible type. Granted I'm only 20 and I'm going to school, but I won't be able to work near as much when classes start in the fall. I want to disagree with your premise.
The economy is not growing fast enough and there aren't enough jobs. I've applied to 20 jobs for the summer and I was rejected from retail to fast food because they weren't looking for someone like me.
Many of my friends faced the same problems, luckily they went into training last month and will be full time employees and students that seek professional development.

Despite all these rejections I'm still growing my network, and will continue to do so until I can secure an internship or minimum wage job so I can support myself later on.
The truth is this generation is the most resourceful and ambitious, but we just don't have the power to change these things.

Of course the generarional criticism will remain the same, the youth will always be degenerate in your eyes.
It's a cycle, so it's more productive to just keep doing what we're doing.

I don't know the town much at all but I'm great at conversation with customers, I can remember regulars names and even their coffees or favorite dishes, nothing better than seeing a regular happy to see you.

I'm competent at most tasks, alert, great at organizing things and prioritizing what needs to be done on the fly but I feel like these things need to be shown as well as told.

If your skill is customer relations then play into that with everything you've got but be real and honest with it in your duties and resume. I lived with my parents for four months after graduating with my double major in chemistry and chemical engineering because I couldn't find a job. They were okay with it as long as I was actively looking for a job the entire time & I found something part-time to cover as many of my own expenses as possible.

Finally found a job, moved out, and got myself stable. Five years later, I paid my parents back for the months I was at home, with interest, as thanks. They wouldn't take it, so I bought them a gift with the money instead.
