I think it's mostly a mechanical/engineering problem.
You just have to get the pressure/temperature high enough to fuse the atoms. So hot the plasma burns any material it comes in contact with.

These experiments have been going on since the 50's but the facilities for testing have been fairly half-assed. That's correct, they have to use magnetic fields to contain the plasma because it's so hot it will burn anything it contacts.

The problem is how do you keep feeding it material and keep the reaction going without interrupting the magnetic field. At the same time you have to be able to harness the energy being released.
It's possible and I think we'll eventually figure it out, but it's complicated as all hell. It's always just "20 years away", but I'll be surprised if it happens in my lifetime.
In the mean time I wish we'd invest more in fission, specifically newer designs like LFTR. Wind/solar as a primary energy source is a meme.

It has to do with pressure and field gradients (things changing value as you move along a direction instead of staying constant). When you have a straight line of plasma confined in a cylinder, everything's happy - the field in the center is more or less uniform and the plasma forms nice neat regions of constant pressure. The moment you put a twist in it (like in a tokamak/toroidal plasma) everything goes wonky - the magnetic field strength on the inner side is stronger than on the outer side, and that throws everything off - field lines don't connect neatly, you get little pockets or islands of constant pressure instead of nice neat rings, etc. Stellarators are a weird geometry that tries to accomplish the same thing as the torus, but in a way that everything lines up right. It's not without it's problems and it's certainly not a practical design for actual power generation, but they make extremely good test-beds for fusion research.

Same reason we aren't using fusion - there's still a host of engineering problems to work out.

Oak Ridge built a basic proof-of-concept device back in the 60's to show that the basic concept of a molten salt reactor was viable, but it never incorporated an in-situ Thorium fuel cycle. The first batch of tests used U-235 (which basically all reactors use) and the second used Thorium-generated U-233, but it was generated by a separate device, not the MSRE prototype.

So they've only successfully engineered half the concept of an LFT reactor. There's still some work being done, but as far as I know it's not something that gets as much support as fusion research.
