>>
>>130300556
Most folks do not understand it, but it up to both ships to avoid the collision.

So for example, lets say I am a large cargo ship and I see a small trawler that might get close. The officer on watch needs to go on the radio, IDyourself, give your speed and heading, and inform the trawler and so on. If you have a collision outside of the controlled waters of a harbor, both ships are at fault.
>>
>>130300382
People here don't know you're not allowed to get close to military vessels
>>
>>130299937
That's not the point.

The ship that got hit is an Aegis ship.

Aegis ship has an insane amount of radars, sonars, sensors, cameras, etc. and is able to move around quickly in water.

It should have detected the container ship from tens of miles away and either warned the container ship to change course or moved out of the way if the ship was getting too close.

Just looking at the picture I can tell instantly that its the cargo who is at fault, just because the destroyed got it on its side while the cargo took it head on. destroyer surely tried to give way but the idiotic philipino captain with his overloaded cargo didn't see shit and/or only saw him when they were already on collision course, because those boat don't turn on a penny and might even need a km or more of headstart as to properly swerve.

>>130299480

>so a civilian merchant ship has the capacity to take down a military warship?

More like when two mass of metal both weighting many hundred tons collide with one another and have no mean to diffuse the kinetic energy from the impact, you get scrap metal. No boat can take the bow of another boat head on without any damages, especially in modern times where boats are powered by mechanical engines that have constant output.

You might be shocked on the rules of the sea. Unless the cargo ship does all it can to avoid the collision they are going to be fucked too.

Don't get me wrong, the CO will get cashiered. The master of the cargo ship is also going to get fucked since he will not able able to prove he did everything he could to avoid the collision.
>>
>>130300541
>Bulwarks bent in
>Denting along the hull
>Not even hold

Insider fact: the whole bow of the ship is a separated, watertight compartment. Like a crumple zone in a car, it's designed to be destroyed and still allow the ship to get home. That ship can still get to port, discharge cargo, and then head to shipyard for a quick multi-million dollar tuneup

Ok, I don't know the first thing about navigating a ship or anything like that but can someone explain to me how such a collision can actually happen?

I mean, I assume ships today mostly use 'technical devices' to navigate, but shouldn't there be at least some guy that actually looks out the window every once in a while to see if there are any ships nearby?

I assume that large ships are not very manoeuvrable, but at some point somebody should realize that there is a huge container ship on a collision course and maybe we should start to communicate, and see what's what.

Both

>>130302212

Rule 2 and Rule 17 mean both ships are at fault.

(a) Nothing in these Rules shall exonerate any vessel, or the owner, master or crew thereof, from the consequences of any neglect to comply with these Rules or of the neglect of any precaution which may be required by the ordinary practice of seamen, or by the special circumstances of the case
(b) In construing and complying with these rules due regard shall be had to all dangers of navigation and collision and to any special circumstances, including the limitations of the vessels involved, which may make a departure from these rules necessary to avoid immediate danger

the stand-on vessel shall maintain her course and speed, but she may take action to avoid collision if it becomes clear that the give-way vessel is not taking appropriate action, or when so close that collision can no longer be avoided by the actions of the give-way vessel alone. In a crossing situation, the stand-on vessel should avoid turning to port even if the give-way vessel is not taking appropriate action. These options for the stand-on vessel do not relieve the give-way vessel of her obligations under the rules

Yes, the Navy guy fucked up. But do not think that the cargo ship guy is also not fucked.

Unless the cargo ship was screaming in the radio as soon as they got within 1 km, started a starboard turn, and was thinking of launching flares then they are fucked.

If you have a collision with another ship as a merchant ship while in open water, you are in deep trouble. Hell, most of the time if a naval ship was within 5km of a ship of ours and didn't have radio contact we would change course to avoid getting within 1 km of them.

>>130304445
It just gets more crowded there every fucking day.
>>
Why is this story so hard to learn details about? Am I going to have to go to whatdoesitmean to get some answers?
Was the cargo ship captain in control of the vessel? Was he compromised by terrorists? Were there any communications between the two ships prior to crash? How did both modern ships lack warning systems? How did neither attempt evasive actions? WAS THE CARGO SHIP CAPTAINED BY A MUSLIM? Did one or both ships get hacked and neither captain is at fault?

Something I need to consult Sorcha about I guess.

Jesus Lord is that fake and the joke is old as the Navy. Just because someone put voices to the transcript doesn't make it real.
Quick rundown:
>International language for Maritime communication is English
>US Navy would not respond in Spanish
>A lighthouse would identify itself as such, not "A-835"
>A lighthouse wouldn't have the radar to detect a ship over the horizon
>A lighthouse wouldn't make contact over VHF

Too bad we can't see the Fitz track to see how the approach was and where they collided. I assume, could be wrong, that they collided right around the start of that track. With a hole in the hull, they'd turn to so as to have the least wind and wave action acting on the hole. Then they assess it, and turn back to port.

True story, I'm friends with a navy lieutenant. We were on vacation in Florida with some friends and wanted to go jet skiing. He couldn't pass the twenty question safety/navigation test to get the rental. Drunk Chads pass that shit all the time. Pathetic.

i am also a merchant mariner.
a deck officer for maersk.
problem here is the US navy never fucking follow COLREGs, ad saily around like they are on a pleasure cruiser in a lake. That's why they are constantly crashing into shit.
They think the rules don't apply to them and expect other ships to get out of their way, but that's not how it works.
You need to train your deck crew better on seamanship.
No other Navy have this problem.
It's just down to poor training and bad attitude.
I met some US sailors in bahrain a couple of years ago and they didn't even know what COLREGs were, and those guys were seamen specialists or whatever you call your deck people in the US navy.

It's nothing, goy, don't worry about it. And a long time ago America was running on more than 120v thanks to our guy Tesla, but Edison and Big Stove (more recently Big Microwave) lobbied hard and managed to get this whitewashed from history. As a result Americans are forced to wait several hours to boil water but more commonly just choose to drink it mildly warm at best hence the unusual popularity of iced beverages such as iced tea and frozen coffee.

A battleship would be sinking far away from a modern destroyer long before the destroyer is in its range, missiles and shit.

It's a basic way of denoting which of the four branches a service member belongs to.

Sailor - Navy
Soldier - Army
Marine - Marine Corps
Airman - Air Force

I'm honestly very surprised and disappointed by the complete lack of any basic military rank and recognition by my fellow Americans on this board. Especially since the information is so easy to get.

>it takes a much longer time to boil water from cold using a stove.
>not using an induction stove

Are you guys living in the stone age?
The most powerful heater on my stove can be cranked up to 3.5kW.
It's enough to boil the biggest pot I have in less than 4 minutes.

Enough water for a tea boils in 15 seconds.

The Navy's theory on armor from the cold war forward has been shit.

Force is not felt on both sides, force as in all things takes the path of least resistance. All matter, all energy takes the path of least resistance in all areas of life.

The one ship had more resistance upon collusion because there was more reinforced mass behind it, the other ship took more force because it had less mass behind the impact portion.

Assuming both are made out of comparable reinforced metals.

This is why a motorcycle BTFOs a truck when it t-bones it.

You must also take into account velocity.

There is a reason bullets almost disintegrate when they hit their target, exploding into sometimes hundreds of pieces and grinding away at the edges.

However if you were to shoot a projectile that was around the same depth of the target, the projectile would obviously destroy it near completely.
