Were the 80s/90s truly a happier time or is it just nostalgia goggles?

It's nostalgia
>>
I was born 93 but I don't really remember 90's at all, so I can't comment.

I can say that 00's was pretty awesome before the smartphone cancer, because people actually socialized more, and it was pretty fun to go over to someone's house to play a computer game instead of now where everyone plays alone in dark over some shitty "stream"

Some of it is nostalgia, some of it was genuinely better, but mostly we just had far less access to media, so we weren't saturated by its negativity.

it was around the 80s when strong independent women movement really gained momentum, and it was then that marriage rates began their decline. women thought it'd make them happier but it hasn't, and in turn unhappy women make for unhappy men like we have today.
>>
>>130291214
It was certainly better here.
Less muslims, nicer neighbours, didn't have politics shoved in every freaking form of media.

some nostalgia but it was actually better. ask any older adults who were already in their 20's/30's in the 80's and 90's and they'll tell you it was way better (at least in USA). economy was doing great, hilarious movies/shows, the future was super bright.

2000 was when things got kind of weird. it wasn't bad but just seemed more negative. 9/11 definitely suddenly left a huge negative stain on how we viewed the world and then everything started revolving around safety and fear. it kept getting worse from there.

>Were the 80s/90s truly a happier time
Yes, they were. When the USSR dissolved, it seemed like there is no global threat anymore and there was a sense of worldwide unity like never before. There was a genuine optimism for the future in the air. The magical year 2000 was just around the corner and it seemed like everything beyond it will be a utopic paradise. Of course, this all was just an illusion, because (((their))) plans were different.
Then the 9/11 came.
Then the worldwide "war on terror" and the global fear surrounding it.
Then the first iPhone and the widespread degeneracy surrounding it.
Then the global (((crisis))).
Then the (((Arab spring))) and all the shitshow around it.
And now we are here.

THINGS
CAN
ONLY
GET
BETTER
>>
>>130291214
There were less feminists, less transsexuals, less degenerate whores, less of everything.

So yes of course it was better. Modern life was a mistake.
>>
>>130291214
Things were better in the sense that it was a lot easier to avoid what was going on in the world on a larger scale. The internet was not pervasive at all, and could still be used as a retreat from the real world.

News was only in the form of newspapers or news programs a couple of times a day. The 80s had the constant threat of nuclear annihilation, but life still went on.

Most pop culture stuff being better is just nostalgia though. I watched a bunch of sitcoms from the 90s recently, and they were nowhere near as funny as they were at the time. This could just be me being desensitised to a bunch of shit though.

Social media has killed any semblance of society though. It gives absolute retards a platform where they think anybody gives a shit.

The early 2000s were the apex of Western power and the recession robbed of us of purpose. We were United in our goal of destroying Islam. Jobs were still plentiful and we still understood our place in this world.

Since then, things have become more confused and thus, life isn't as good. The culture is broken. The politics are convoluted. The job market is recovering, but fragile.

People are outrageously politicized and the no fun squad is ruining good times... We used to have fun, we could tell off color jokes without fear of repercussions.

No, there were "Riot Grrrl" and Tankgirl imitating bullshit galore. L7 taking out their tampons and chucking them at the audience. Courtney Love going on and on about muh womens rights in her half lesbian band. It still existed but it was way less Marxist talking points and nobody gave a shit about trannys, they just existed under the radar.

The biggest most noticeable difference between now and the 90s was less media saturation. Not being chained to a device that demands your constant attention and feeds you up to the second media propaganda was the good ol' days, whenever they were. Even Zizek in an interview waxes nostalgic for the 1940s, when the only communication of the day was the mailman delivering letters in the morning "then you were free for another 24hrs".

I personally believe social media and selfies were be the beginning of the end for the west.

It's the tipping point of people being completely self obsessed and thinking of themselves as celebs. That much ego is impractical for a society to co-exist successfully.

The difference between 80s dorks and present-day ones is that the 80s ones actually knew useful things, like how to play chess or build a ham radio. Today's dorks read anime and collect superhero figurines.

Imagine if all your friends routinely called you to see what you were doing so you could all hang out as a group at the park, the beach, the mall, the movies, one of their houses.

Well, today you have real nerds/dorks and fake ones. The latter were basically non-existent back then, because nerds were ridiculed (and more or less rightfully - what we see today is a cancer, the society full of "nerds" can never function well).
I still think that the old school nerds were much more knowledgeable overall. Today everything is too high level, especially concerning the IT.

Wanted a job? You walked into a business and got one.

Wanted to talk to friends? You knocked on your neighbor's door.

Kids actually went out and played on the streets.

Where I live, the beaches were never packed and traffic was a non-issue.

I'm middle-aged and I can tell you that this is definitely true for a lot of people my age, but it is easy enough to escape it if you remember to live for your own happiness and fulfillment rather than trying to please others (with the exception of trying to live up to your kids' reasonable expectations when they're little). A lot of people get stuck in jobs and relationships they secretly hate because they're afraid of losing face in front of other people. Also, you have to keep learning new things all the time in order not to stagnate. But it can still be hard at times.

Nah, 9/11 actually felt great. I mean, as a young man that was full of piss and vinegar, I wasn't afraid... I was ready to kick terrorist ass. Friends were signing up left and right and I waited until I was finished high-school a couple of years later... But by then, Afghanistan had simmered down and we weren't in Iraq, so I found my current career.

The aftermath of 9/11 was fucking galvanizing. We lost the unity an righteous fury and replaced it with social justice, treason and identity politics. I blame the recession. It took the wind out of our sails and the kids watched their parents struggle through tough financial times, made them pessimists and lose hope.

> Wanted a job? You walked into a business and got one.

Can actually verify. I was a ward of the state and when I was 18 I had to fend for myself.

> spend 3 days dressed nicely & walking around neighborhood asking businesses if they're hiring
> get a job working 8 hours a day 6 days a week at a cafe with no experience on the 3rd day
> get tips right away and rent a weekly apartment (main tenants were old people on social security)
> do nothing but work and look for a better job on my weekly day off
> find one 3 months later in the want ads (people actually paid for ads in the paper trying to find people who would work for them then)

Fast forward 10 years and we've imported millions of illegals who even took the job of the paperboy. An industry that had been dominated by 10 year olds on their bikes throwing newspapers at the door was now dominated by teams of a dozen mexicans in white vans. Gen Z is probably going to put us into camps and we probably deserve it.

The only good news about premature baldness is that as you get older people will stop making fun of you and it'll just be taken for granted as a natural effect of aging... although it's still galling to get the odd slighting remark from fat, obnoxious women who can control their own appearance.

People have really lost the ability to age properly. Everyone wants to pretend to be 25 forever, and it looks terrible on the middle-aged (and still worse on the old). Back in the 80s, old people had their own distinctive and old-fashioned clothing; I remember being shocked when that started to change with the Boomers. Old men and even old women can look very dignified and interesting if they dress their age, especially if they make a special effort to be elegant.

THIS.

No one felt entitled to openly be assholes in public. They're were very strong distinction between "culture" but everyone composed themselves relatively the same in public, for respect of other people. There was no hootin-n-hollering and look at me personalities, even from blacks.

When I say culturally distinctive, I mean; white people, black people, straight people, gay people, looked/dressed differently, but everyone composed themselves. If there was a march for gay pride or KKK, everyone just seen them as nut cases, and didn't really care. And financially, it was better because everything was taking off. No one gave a shit about politics, and caring made you seem a bit like a looser. The only thing that was bad, was there was a much higher crime rate.

the only thing I envy about todays kids, and I really don't envy them in a lot of ways, being born into a self obsessed social media world is one, it's shallow, fake, and tedious, but is normal to today's young, and there's pressure to fit in with that or be alienated, and where people can bully people on 2 fronts now, online and irl. Plus the dangers of being young and naive on the internet.

But what I do envy is that games today are incredible, the crap we had (and were very happy with, because that was cutting edge then) is a stark contrast. Though I do think devs go too much for graphics and stories, and in a lot of ways mechanics have stood pretty still for years now on the whole. Hopefully this gen can be a bit more creative.

Bullshit, britshit. There were no major wars that the west was involved heavily in during that time. Hell most military interventions during that time pretty much involved some western country kicking the teeth in of some uppity dictator. Furthermore there was the burgeoning of the internet and it was a time before people got their assholes tied up over terrorism. Social media and and 9/11 did a lot to make this world a more miserable place.

This was a time when feminism and blm type people were still regularly mocked by most of our culture and the media.
This was also a period where also of financial bullshit was going down so the economy was rigged and really nice for anyone with half a brain so all that easy money helped ease over any societal issues which may have been already emerging.

As a Millennial in my mid-twenties, looking back, I have a much more favorable opinion of the 80s than the 90s.

90s-early 00s seem to be peak Jew/nigger culture. Sex and the City, Will and Grace, hardcore hip-hop, rock and roll was overwhelmingly morbid, depressing nu-metal and grunge shit, the president was getting blow jobs in the Oval Office, (((Seinfeld))) and (((Sarah Michelle Parker))) were the face of America, Colombine, and that's when the PC/SJW culture went into overdrive.

There were positives: anime went mainstream, the economy was strong, no Islam/terrorism bullshit, the men seemed to dress like men as the super slim fit faggotry of the mid-late 00s hadn't caught on yet, video gaming really took off, the internet (for better and for worse).

Overall though, the 80s had New Wave, great rock and roll, Reaganus Prime was president, black music was Prince and Michael Jackson as opposed to gangster hip-hop, and even the hip-hop that existed back then was lighthearted and wasn't dark, violent, and thuggish like 90s hip-hop, watching movies and listening to music from that era, it seemed brighter, sunnier, and a better time to be a kid, and as cheesy as it sounds, America seemed to be America. But that's just my perspective as someone who didn't live at that time looking in.

I honestly think this is the cause. The proliferation of information to an overarchingly retarded population was a bad idea. It's one thing to a few qualifiers to have access (the intelligence to set it up and use it/not really caring about being called a "nerd" if you use it)... but just giving to everyone with a pulse was a bit of a bad idea.

peoples judgements are no longer based on their reality, but the reality that the internet shows them, which is selective due to their own choices/tendencies.

If you don't have a rational mind (i.e. 15 y.o.) then you're going to be hyper influenced by whatever you see on the web, as opposed to the reality that is right in front of you.

I was born in '91, and grew up in a middle class neighborhood, in a part of NY that is traditionally pretty isolated and conservative. what I remember from the 90's was the sort of average "middle class 90's town" feel. we would walk to the video store to rent movies for the weekend, I'd go to church every sunday nearby, and mom would walk me home from school, since dad worked nights, I went to CCD, played videogames, played outside before people went crazy over stranger danger... times were good in the 90's where I lived, and when 9/11 happened, I can vividly remember that the atmosphere changed. Especially in the city itself. in the 90's, NY was the chillest fucking place. After 9/11, it became a paranoid shithole.

There were also countless asians, like legendary 90s troll of comp.lang.lisp Xah Lee.

Again, no. There weren't "lots" of them. If you weren't an upstanding citizen you were more likely a commie or a proto-commie, so you would get a citation to the nearest police department for interrogation.

The 90s were the best. People were too afraid to be retarded.

You wanted riots? In 1992 Iron Maiden was coming to Chile, but because the church said they were a satanic group, the people (mostly parents) agreed with them and started rioting. The government stepped in and cancelled the show. Iron Maiden called us "medievals"
90s ruled.

What they call high-waist is a bit different, I agree. They just don't make jeans like they used to.
>>
>>130309095
Most of my pants I pull up to around the belly button, dress and jeans. You just have to stay away from slim fit. Regular fit clothing gives you more room.

Also, always go for pleated. Flat-front is late 90s-00s faggotry and needs to end. No one wants to see the outline of another guy's ass, especially in formal situations.

88 here, 9/11 fucked this country hard. I remember my youth in the 90s and the lead up to 9/11. The world seems placid, peaceful. Fukuyama "End of history" seemed in full effect. Star Trek the next generation seemed like a possible future. We all though democracy, diversity, equality would work.

I drank the coolaid big time. I joined the Army as soon as I could because of my patriotism and belief in the "machine" . After that experience, I decided that I wasn't fighting for this country, or anything noble at all. I was fighting for. I started putting family, religion and race before country. Fuck Country, fuck the Constitution and fuck the republic.

People will keep on voting for free shit, and "they" will keep on sucking the state dry at the top. The workers and movers will be bleed dry. The state will keep on replacing fathers, family, race and God. You will be left with cold and dead husks who have no gender, passion or drive. Just pleasure slaves. The only think holding this shit hole together is religion.

No, it's how men actually wore their pants pre-late 90s. It's a more classic, elegant look, regardless of body size. Low rise is trashy.
>>
>>130310839
>shittier fashion
objectively false. sillier fashion, yes, but definitely not shittier.

>that was several orders of magnitude shittier.
it was also simpler, and was only populated by people who knew what they were doing, not every single retard with a phone. it was also new, so it had not been consumed by corporations yet. half the corporations that own the internet now, either didnt exist yet, or were small companies themselves. You actually had a choice when it came to what search engine to use. You could use google, Yahoo, Ask jeeves, etc.

you could use internet explorer, netscape, opera, etc

"social media"? what's that? you want to get social, you went to a forum for whatever fandom you wanted to talk about.

sure it was slower, but it also was not the driving force in our lives. you went "online" maybe an hour or two before dinner, after you spent the rest of the day playing outside.

>>
>>130310586
>>130311136
in fact the reason high waist was an effective look is because it makes your legs look longer.

mid and low rise jeans make your legs look short and stubby. thats why men before the late 90's seemed more athletic, (although they were, and obesity rates were lower) because their pants were higher up, which led to the optical illusion of long legs.

same for women, arguably. what we now call "mom jeans" achieved the exact same effect.
>>
>>130311136
I wear nothing by dickies in an office environment with a shirt and tie.

In the U.S.A. the 90s was a golden era.
Money was high, spending was high, everyone was given everything, new shows that never existed, new toys that never existed, video games became main stream.

It's mostly real and not just for children, parents were given so much credit they could buy anything.

This ultimately became their downfall and caused the housing market crash (Bill Clinton allowed niggers to buy houses).

more than that, bill clinton allowed banks to jew niggers into buying homes they clearly couldn't afford, bought with bad loans they would never be able to repay.

In general, that he allowed banks to get involved with real estate at all, is the real crime here.

>>
>>130291214
>Were the 80s/90s truly a happier time?
Yes, but happier doesn't necessarily mean happy.
There wasn't anything inherently great about the 90s, and the good things had to do with the fact that we still had remnants of the old world, and less of what makes contemporary life so terrible. I mean, there was no social media and considerably fewer minorities. Those things alone make for a better world.

Some of us could see the writing on the wall, though. I mean, you don't have to be a mathematical genius to understand that a continuous stream of immigration is going to lead to a massive demographic crisis.

We should post a typical day in the 90s or 80s and compare it to present day fags.

M-F(1994)
>Wake up late for school (no parents in the morning, latchkey kid)
>Wait for older friend to pick me up who had a license
>Go to school with like 5 of us squished in a beat up car missing a window covered in spraypaint
>Skip first class and hang out in the designated smoking area with all the other kids skipping (which was at least 1/2 the school)
>Go to lunch with girlfriend, who went to a diff school. Lunch was fries at some shitty restaurant yet we were all skinny as fuck
>After school meet up with friends and gf either at a coffee shop, outside shitty arcade or in friend's basement who had parents who lived overseas.
>Walk gf home, fuck her in a public park as nowhere to go
>Occasionally get harassed by police catching us fucking "Hey, what are you doing in that bush"
>Go home, try and call gf, get her parents or older brother and have to talk to them for like 5 minutes. Have to fight with my own sister to use the phone for 5mins as she's talking to her bf. We organize fucking times for next day at her house because her parents have gone skiing for the weekend.
>Get a call from hacker friends on a partyline, talk to like 60 people all at once. Do pranks like trying to link up two phone sex lines together to see how long they last until one figures it out.
>Go to sleep while listening to local radio sex education call in show and try to identify kids from school calling in asking about their STDs.

Weekend
>Go to work at shitty job, make tons of tips
>Illegally procure beers and booze with older friend's license
>Go to bush party in the woods with half the school, build a huge fire, sit around it getting wasted and partying.
>Get a blowjob from my gf in the woods
>Police always show up and break up the party scattering us all over the city because a fight breaks out
>Spend all night driving around in a convoy of vehicles looking for a place to party

Not really, no. The culture was still awful. It was simply better because there was less of the shit that makes the present so terrible.
But a person not having cancer doesn't necessarily make things great for that person. It just makes him normal, which admittedly sounds like a fantastic thing to someone who does have cancer.
It's the same with the 90s. It was better because of the absence of the things that make our lives terrible, but aside from that there wasn't much that made the 90s inherently good.

I will say that the kids / teens I know do seem more stressed than we were. Maybe partially due to having 500 "friends" on social media? That equals constant drama. We had a group of friends, maybe 5, maybe 20, but that equates to much less drama in your life. You get 500 friends that constantly communicate and there will be issues constantly. We barely even talked on our rotary phones to each other, much less perused dozens of trivial "status" updates a day.

>Growing up was awesome
>Would ride bike with friends and go to parks and other places
>played tackle football in the mud with friends
>would finish with clothes all torn and muddy
>ride over to the local junior college and take showers there by the pool.
>use their laundry machines to clean our clothes while we went swimming in the pool
>Ride over to baskin robbins for some ice cream.
>When high school came around you would tell your parents you would be back by 1am
>Nobody had cell phones
>There were no "helicopter moms" calling you every 15 minutes.
>girls responded to you. They would put out an effort to look and smell good.
>There were very few fat people.
>You had shopping malls that were a great place to go to meet chicks.
>It was easy to get a job to make some money. I worked at McDonald's from sophomore year till I finished high school. It was great spending money to buy stupid things with.
>The music was good. The clubs were fun to go to. There was little to no violence because at that time the 3rd world were not invading the clubs.
>Nobody cared what halloween costume you wore. Nobody cared about jokes. Nobody cared about insults. There were no SJW types (if there were nobody paid them any attention).
>Computers were the domain of whites and asians. They were looked as "nerdy" and as such you didn't have morons spamming stupid crap everywhere.
>People were happy. It was a good time to be alive.
>The stupid things you did were lost in the sands of time. Today everything is documented.

I am glad I lived then. It was nice to have normal relationships with women without worrying if she was going to say "rape" later. It was easy to get beer and cigarettes. Nobody did "stings" on places to bust them so shop owners didn't give a shit that you would come in and grab a bunch of beer and whiskey.
