displacement? wtf does displacement have to do with anything in avoiding collisions?
i dont know what rules you have in US but the rest of the world uses this ones

18. Responsibilities between vessels
Except in narrow channels, traffic separation schemes, and when overtaking (i.e., rules 9, 10, and 13)
A power-driven vessel must give way to:
a vessel not under command;
a vessel restricted in her ability to manoeuvre (this may include vessels towing one another;[19]
a vessel engaged in fishing;
a sailing vessel.
A sailing vessel must give way to:
a vessel not under command;
a vessel restricted in her ability to manoeuvre;
a vessel engaged in fishing.
A vessel engaged in fishing when underway shall, so far as possible, keep out of the way of:
a vessel not under command;
a vessel restricted in her ability to manoeuvre.
Any vessel other than a vessel not under command or a vessel restricted in her ability to manoeuvre shall, if possible, not impede the safe passage of a vessel constrained by her draft, exhibiting the signals in Rule 28.
A vessel constrained by her draft shall navigate with particular caution having full regard to her special condition

where do you see anything about displacement?
>>
>>130288302
USN are complete jackasses and are notoriously know for constantly bullying civilian ships out of their way with no regard of safety sea regulations

so its not as expensive to repair. i mean look at that pic and realize nothing was moving at high velocity. probably a 8 mph collision
>>
>>130285330
Woah, easy there with the hyperbole.

Destroyers are screens. Their job is to go in advance of capital ships and report on any enemy sightings, as well as usually having some ASW utility. That's why they're small and cheap.

Hell, in the Battle offor Samaritan in the Pacific, Japanese heavy cruiser and battleship guns weren't an immediate death knell for the few destroyers that charged the Japanese Center Force because their guns punched in one side of the destroyers and out the other. Catastrophic damage to be sure, but if the shells had lodged in the ship and then exploded (as they would on a capital ship with heavier armor belts) it would have immediately broke the ship in two.
>>
>>130285330
armor is pointless, if you're hit you're hit. it's all about the radar, distance of engagement (aka outranging them with your weapons) and active deterrence. outrun, outmaneuver, or gun them down first

displacement is a unit of mass

(g) The term "vessel restricted in her ability to manoeuvre" means a vessel which from the nature of her work is restricted in her ability to manoeuvre as required by these Rules and is therefore unable to keep out of the way of another vessel. The term "vessels restricted in their ability to manoeuvre" shall include but not be limited to:
(i) a vessel engaged in laying, servicing, or picking up a navigation mark, submarine cable or pipeline;
(ii) a vessel engaged in dredging, surveying or underwater operations;
(iii) a vessel engaged in replenishment or transferring persons, provisions or cargo while underway;
(iv) a vessel engaged in the launching or recovery of aircraft;
(v) a vessel engaged in mine clearance operations;
(vi) a vessel engaged in a towing operation such as severely restricts the towing vessel and her tow in their ability to deviate from their course.

A cargo ship traveling into/out of port should fall into this criteria no?
NO

They couldn't outmaneuver a cargoship for God's sake.

Can't see this playing out very well on the battlefield either. I studied WWIII, and they didn't build destroyers this weak back then, that I can tell you. Hopefully this whole class of destroyers has a major design overhaul because if it doesn't, they're useless weapons of war and a waste of taxpayer money.
>>
>>130289401
To be fair the destroyer was supposedly doing 3 knots, it was practically drifting, you have near no manueverability in such a speed
Probably some breakdown that failed to communicate?
Who knows
>>
>>130289464

if thay had a breakdown they should have communicate this to the other vsl, more so they should have broadcasted a safety message to inform all nearby vsl about the issue and put on the lights/shapes for not under command
they did nothing from above or we don;t have info about it. unit then they are guilty for the collision 90%. the other retards should have done something also not ram a ship just because you have pririty
>>
>>130290298
>container ship moving several inches an hour

>>130282547

>>
>>130290945

you realize youre polish
>>
>>130290147
I guarantee it wasn't the ship at fault but the crew.
Serious negligence. a bunch of officers are getting fired. there are so many things that had to fail to let this happen

anyway tho, ship vs. ship doesn't exist anymore. it's ship vs. missile, ship vs. plane, or ship vs. sub. in all scenarios the ship loses no matter what its armor is. so you don't give them armor

in the cold war when the two military powers were escalating designs and building armor on their ships, russians came up with a plane to defeat any armor by detonating nukes underwater. didn't even need to be accurate. the shockwave from the collapsed evaporated 1 sq. mile of water would rip apart any hull nearby. made shit pointless.

>>

Yes. /k/ used to have threads all the time about how female sailors didn't have the physical strength to preform necessary tasks aboard ship. Officers and NCOs who refused to to certify females who couldn't do the job were sanctioned, so any officers or NCOs that didn't want to commit career suicide passed females even if they couldn't do the job. The end result being that a large number of navy ships are effectively under crewed even though they have the proper body count aboard.

Also, how the fuck do you crash at fucking cargo ship? They have real time GPS data available and the american ship had all kinds of radars.

No, getting several million dollars in radar equipment rammed by a ship the size of a football field overrides minority preference.

You're on a giant ice rink, and everything moves slower than can be perceived by the naked eye--kind of like the house hand on a clock. Movement is perceived retroactively by maintaining an awareness of previous radar pictures. It's surprisingly easy to lose situational awareness, or to remember 9/10 things, and forget the tenth. Corrective movements are acted out over the span of several minutes, as again, it's like an ice rink. You can't stop, or change directly quickly, and have to project far into the future. If you fuck up a projection, or miss something, you will often not have enough time to react. You can spend minutes watching powerless as the inevitable unfolds in front of you.

In fact, the majority of collusions happen in perfect weather.

The cool thing is that there will be an investigation and a case study published within the year, and the GPS and IFF data can bu uploading into a bridge simulator for other officers to relive the event, train, and see where the mistakes were made.

>>130294822
>have AIS
That you can turn off
>>
>>130294504
They can potentially do that, but that only happened in the good days when container ships made money.

Now there's a lot more ships chasing less cargo, so they are slow steaming at ~12 knots which uses up many, many times less fuel.

That's also the 'eco' speed bulk carriers and tankers normally sail at too, although their max speed is only marginally higher at 14-14.5kn
>>
>>130282422
>>130282547
According to fox news the cargo ship was FOUR TIMES as large as the destroyer and crashed into it at full speed and head on.
>>
>>130293858
Navy sailors from any country can be arrogant shits. It's probably happened several times over the years. And that doesn't count the number of times a ship ran aground because of this.

>>
>>130294822
AIS is used as a secondary system on Navy ships because it's not as reliable as mindful manual radar tracking. There are two watch teams (one on the bridge, and one in CIC) that are supposed to be maintaining a contact picture. AIS is pretty much ignored on Navy ships. AIS is great when you have a skeleton crew with only a couple people on watch. A competent watch team with multiple radar viewers is better than AIS. Though, I'd pick AIS over an incompetent watch crew like the one on the Fitz.
>>

8 knots and whatever Gods decides to help with the drift

No, they probably lost situational awareness. It would be easiest to do so if the cargo ship was overtaking, gaining on the Fitz from aft, but we'll find out exactly what happened later. US ships actually DON'T generally fuck around with tankers because we know it's harder for them to maneuver than it is for us, and they'll fucking pulverize you. It's like playing chicken with a mountain.

>>
Bring them home. What was a "war ship" doing over there? Trying to start a war I bet.
>>
>>130288302
Submarines win against carriers and just about every surface ship. They are essential the predator of the ocean and surface ships are the prey. Modern submarines are so quiet and fast and can dive so deep and can carry so many armaments that there is not much that surface ships can do to stop them if they want to fire cruise missiles at strategic positions, carry out espionage, or sink adversary surface vessels.

This is the reason that the US navy is pushing to hard to build more and more submarines. This is the reason that Australia was willing to spend $41 billion USD for 12 submarines.
