Good Ol' Rebel really should be seen as a Confederate bitter about losing the war more than him actually hating the Constitution or Declaration. As for Confederates versus Unionists both considered themselves the successors to the Founding Fathers' legacy. Both of them were admirers of the Founding Fathers with some like Lee having his own family be one of Washington's officers. This is why the Confederate seal has George Washington on it.

Confederates had the mindset that the north was guilty of corrupting the union and giving too much power to the federal government and using that power to benefit themselves at the cost of the south through things like tariffs. They were also the disciples of Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson who were huge into states rights and limited government. The unionists on the other hand believed that the union might've been screwing up in some regards but that wasn't enough of an excuse for secession and believed that the union was not yet lost to tyranny. Poor rural whites for example sometimes had unionist feelings as well because the Confederate government didn't sell the cause well enough to them so they just saw it as a rich man's revolt rather than a real revolution.

The song isn't really rejecting his ancestry. The rebel is basically mourning that the rebels lost the war and his hatred for the union for the mess that was Reconstruction. For example in the song it mentions the Freeman's Bureau which was an agency for assisting former slaves to integrate into southern society. While the bureau arguably did do some good things for the former slaves it was often at the cost of the Confederate veterans who lived there. Then you also had many northerners who moved south just to exploit reconstruction by taking major political positions since due to the Ironclad Oath anyone who supported the Confederacy in any way was unable to run for public office which basically meant only yanks, blacks, and some southern unionists could run for office. This caused tons of bitterness which is how groups like the Ku Klux Klan, White League, and Red Shirts formed to fight these groups.

Would highly recommend John Brown Gordon's Reminsceses of the Civil War. Started the war as a captain with no military experience, in charge of a bunch of hill boys around where I'm from in the north GA/AL/TN area. Ended the war at Appomattox leading 1 of 2 corps in the Army of Northern Virginia. Wounded a bunch of times, but came out without an amputation.

Forrest's story is fascinating. He didn't found the Klan but was voted as leader by the founders because they were his former soldiers and they admired him more than anyone. He claims he wasn't that active but I figure he was but when things got out of hand he ended it. But there's more to the story before kissing black woman cheeks. He went to his local Presbyterian church every sunday because of his wife but didn't believe and because of it ended up in constant arguments with his minister. Those arguments along with meeting one of his former men who became a Baptist preacher in Texas turned his heart to God and he converted. Lincoln's funeral meanwhile didn't allow blacks and when blacks complained they only let in a tiny handful and made them stand in the back away from the whites.
