Funny how the russians recently lost a ship to a "cargo ship" as well, in the Mediterranean . Now the Americans rammed a ship off the coast of Japan, presumably north of Japan. Am I crazy to think that these countries are sinking and firing at each others ships in acts of provocation and just use a cargo ship to blame it on?

From Navy times
As of 9 a.m. local time, the Fitzgerald's crew was still fighting to control damage to the ship as it limped backed to land, three sources with knowledge the incident told Navy Times. Its commanding officer, Cmdr. Bryce Benson, was incapacitated in the accident and the executive officer has assumed command.

The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. about 50 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, Japan. The Fitzgerald suffered extensive damage above and beneath the waterline when it struck the Philippine-flagged merchant vessel ACX Crystal, U.S. officials say. Initial reports suggested that Auxiliary Machine Room 1 and two crew berthings were completely flooded. Given the late hour, most crew members not standing watch would be in the berthing.

I'm starting to think with 65+ of the Burke's in service, Fitz being 22 years old, another 5 Flight IIA's in trials and another 7+ planned (including Flight IIIs) or in construction (IIRC) with the expectation of more being ordered, Fitz might have seen her last tour.

Looks like he was the XO of the ship, then moved to CO

CDR Bryce Benson
Executive Officer (November 2015 - March 2017)
A native of Green Bay, Wisconsin, CDR Bryce Benson graduated from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1999 and earned his commission through the Naval ROTC program.

CDR Benson’s initial sea tours were on the pre-commissioned ship USS WINSTON S. CHURCHILL (DDG 81) and USS KAUFFMAN (FFG 59) where he deployed to the 5th Fleet in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2006, he was assigned as the Weapons Officer on USS FORREST SHERMAN (DDG 98) and participated in the maiden deployment to the 6th Fleet Area of Operations. In 2007, CDR Benson screened for the early command program and subsequently served as the Executive Officer then as Commanding Officer of USS GUARDIAN (MCM 5), forward deployed from Sasebo Japan, 2008-2010.

Ashore, CDR Benson was selected for the Navy’s Washington D.C. Internship Program where he earned a Master’s degree in Organizational Management from The George Washington University and served internships on the Navy Staff, Joint Staff, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense. In 2010, CDR Benson was assigned to the Navy Personnel Command, Surface Warfare Distribution (PERS 41) as the Placement Coordinator for Amphibious and Mine Warfare Forces. In 2013, he reported to the U.S. Pacific Command where he served as the Executive Assistant to the Director for Operations (J3) and as an Integrated Air and Missile Defense Staff Officer (J36).

In November 2015, CDR Benson reported as the Executive Officer of USS FITZGERALD (DDG 62) forward deployed from Yokosuka, Japan as part of the Surface Navy’s Command Fleet Up program.

PS....confirmed white

We shall see the repair cost. I know the navy also wants to dump two other boats in Japan that need a lot of work to get back to full running. Might use this to press that all three get striked from the navy list.

>>
>>130228957
Maybe. Fitz is also a helicopter-less Flight I ship which limits her ASW ops in a region potentially littered with dozens of Chinese and DPRK subs so I can imagine the NAVY at least wants to trade her out of the area.

Same way car crashes happen on undivided freeways: sheer volumes and regular routes mixed with a little human error.

At night, another vessel in a lane may confuse another helmsman's perception of a ship going to port or starboard and turn into another vessel on accident due to the illusion/assumption of the navigation lights of the first vessel.

Shit, there's lots of ship collisions every year; at least four on the Great Lakes alone since March (all minor).

Take a look at how many ship are out there in the world: http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/

(You cannot track most military vessels with this.)

In the US Navy there is almost always a court martial if a ship is disabled or sinks, even if the Commander is a hero.

For example, the commander of the USS Cole, even if he was credited for saving the ship by ordering the compartments sealed after getting some intel reports, still had a Court martial, even if by the end he was viewed as doing exactly the right thing.

Naval warships aren't merchant vessels. They are surprisingly maneuverable. They are fitted with CRP (controllable-reversible-pitch) propellers, which allows them to stop very rapidly compared to civvie ships. If it is properly designed, a ship is MOST maneuverable the faster it is moving, due to the increased water flow over control surfaces.
>>
>>130231049
You would figure between radar, and port and starboard bridge watch, somebody would see a ship the size of a football stadium

Some WWII fighters did have shielding to protect fighters in dogfights. It would be pointless to so equip a fighter with armor these days as most engagements wouldn't approach gun range, and if it did a hit just about anywhere on the craft would put it out of the sky.

Doesn't the Destroyer have advanced sensors like radar and such? Kind of ironic that these ships are supposed to defend themselves from subs and anti-ship missiles, and a huge cargo ship sneaks up on them.
>>
>>130231049
If I were to make a guess, I'd say there were in shipping lanes in a shallow part of the ocean where their drafts required them to stay in the channels less they risk grounding on a reef/sand bar/shallows and one drifted out of their lane into the other's lane or that while trying to create a greater distance between the two, almost drifted into the shallows and turned back in a little too quickly. It was also dark.

It's happened quite a few times in the narrow channel on the upbound route to the Soo Locks a few times. Shit, one freighter cut another in half and sunk her in a 2 mile-wide channel under the Mackinac Bridge back in the 60s, even with collision radar.
>>
>>130231288

In today's navy, literally any fuck up for a high ranking officer is career suicide. Don't get me wrong, colluding with another ship is a momumental fuck up though. I was in one ship that collided with another during RAS. The CO had literally just taken over command, the accident happened, his career was over as he was relieved of command.
>>
>>130231288
>>130231288
>What's the purpose of that? It seems awfully unfair.
Life is unfair.

For example, the CO might of been asleep in his bunk and a Jr. officer had the watch, but it still the CO fault since the CO job is to make sure the people in charge are up to standards.

Also note, a court martial does not mean punishment, it just means a trial. The Court Martial can clear the commander of any wrong doing and move on.

The Filipino ship was actually being captain'd by a Filipino Chinese

In 2017 almost everyone on a boat stays the fuck inside and relies on their instruments (computers). The Chinese are attempting a propaganda war to make the USN shed its invincible image. Brilliant move

>How the fuck does a Navy vessel manage to hit a cargo ship in open water? It's fucking huge.

It doesn't. From the moment another ship appears on the horizon/radar it should be tracked and monitored by the military vessel, even if it's a known commercial ship.
If shit gets too close, it should definitely have some kind of communication going on to avoid a collision.

The smaller boat yields, because less mass/inertia to stop/change.

... There are so many points where it could've been avoided it's fucking mind-boggling.

After a certain point it becomes /x/ tier conspiracy that the navy actually set it up to happen for some political objective.

> It seems awfully unfair.

Shit in the military usually is.

>What's the purpose of that?

Whenever anything bad happens they have a massive inquiry and shove microscopes up the asses of everyone involved to see if they can pin blame on somebody. If they need a scapegoat bad enough, they'll admit that somebody did the very best they could.... But they could have done better, so punishment. Happened to me once.

>Have job handling top secret material locked in a safe-like file cabinet

>Co worker who compulsively checks to make sure cabinet is locked whenever he walks by it.
>Comes open even though it was locked
>Buddy and I logged as last people to close it
>Massive inquiry, buddy and I put in front of a panel of senior people and grilled about how well we follow procedure.
>We're basically guilty until proven innocent and they assume we must have fucked up.
>Manage to prove that there was a malfunction with locking mechanism and reproduce the error that causes it to open when properly locked
>Buddy and I still get yelled at and everybody not in our direct chain of command still assumes we fucked it up, because the inquiry board doesn't want to admit they were wrong about us.

It serves a purpose, because there are a lot of stupid fuck ups in the military, but it's also horseshit

Who knows what the future of naval warfare/design will bring. If anti-missile laser systems become so effective that missile barrage no longer pose a threat to warships it may lead to a reversion to old fashioned heavy naval gunnery required to sink an enemy vessel with warheads too fast for anti-missile laser defense systems to intercept

Well they could make use of it if they modernized the shells and gunpowder. Today's shells are guided and act more like JDAMs. There is also different types of rounds like depleted uranium which set fire to the insides of other ships and tanks. Guns on a BB could be fitted out with smaller cluster rounds to shotgun targets on shore.

Its harder than you think. Coastal sailing isn't the same as open ocean sailing. Not to mention there aren't exactly traffic lights out there to regulate the flow of traffic. You also have to stay out of shallow waters so you don't run aground.

It's not a cruiser and you don't know what happened, maybe they just weren't able to move out of the way. If the cargo ship was sailing nearby and suddenly changed her course then all you can do is cut your losses and try to mitigate as much damage as possible, which they probably did.
Just because there was a collision that doesn't mean it couldn't have been worse if they didn't try to avoid it.

The El Faro is a sad tale.

Built in 1975 as a roll-on/roll-off and lift-on/lift-off cargo ship, It was expanded in the 1990s IIRC.

It was a odd design, and a older ship, and was working the Jacksonville, Florida - Puerto Rico route when Hurricane Joaquin was coming by. The routed themselves away from it, but it changed course and gave them a direct hit. In the middle of the storm they lost power and it floundered with all hands.

Cargo ships don't just 'suddenly change course', the ship that it hit was over 5 times its displacement with a third of the engine power.

They didn't 'mitigate damage', that was probably the worst part of the ship to hit considering the berthing quarters, including the CO

>>
>>130227327
it was hit by a CARGO SHIP, not a fucking rocket, they can take massive hits and not sink.
>>
>>130241255
They are not bare minimum, you can't be bare minimum swimmer. You either know how to swim or you drown, and they pull your dumb ass out of the pool put you in training and if you drown like a retard again, you're out.
I used to be a navy fag, I saw this shit happen. If you kick and splash like a fucking retard they boot you out. There's no half ass swimming.
>>
>>130241487
Not a single float seen during boot. Wtf are you talking about?
>>
>>130241538
they don't kick you out, you go either go to remedial every morning before the rest of your squad wakes up until you can pass the swim qualification test or get reverted into the class behind you. if you fail multiple times you're out.
>>130241611
the floats were a joke, nancy
>>
>>130241717
When I went in, you drowned, they give you 1 more chance and you're out. There's no "bare minimum" swimming in the Navy, john.
>>
>>130241538
No, you're a retard. Maybe YOUR bootcamp was this way, but the new Navy is weak and full of niggers. I went to boot in 2013 and they will let you try the swim test again and again and again until you pass. I'm a white but had some paperwork mix up at the medical building and missed my division's swim test so they sent me to do it with the niggers going to try again. When I got to the pool there was nothing but niggers everywhere just waiting to try again. Seen it with my own eyes cletus.

>modified Yoke

It happened after 1900, they were most likely in Condition Yoke, no modifications. Setting Zebra is part of GQ, so that's their current condition.

Those 7 guys that are missing, even money says they're in the flooded compartments. I hope it was quick.
>>
>>130225657
Probably had a rough night. I don't blame him. Imagine being woken up by a violent shock that sends you flying on the walls followed by several tons of seawater being poured on your face.
>>
>>130241885
same with cg, but if you could swim but can't pass the timed laps you're given another chance. most knew they wouldn't make the next test and didnt want to go through PT outside the pool to await the next swim test so they dropped out.
surprise surprise...they were all niggers.

torture.
the cg is incredibly racist. i realized this in boot camp and 'A'-school. niggers don't pass so they make them train their ass off and then send them home and laugh as they walk away.
they drug test you when you arrive, and we had this nigger test positive for marijuana. they didn't tell him until week 6 even though they knew that same first week. treated him like shit then kicked him out.
made him call his family and tell them to pick him up and they wouldn't because he tarnished the family name. had nowhere to go and ended up with a dishonorable discharge.
couldn't swim for shit either

Do keep in mind that it's not all a huge coordinated plan. The Chicoms running China.inc do want to divest and launder their money to safer places, and western real estate is the best avenue for that. Most of the Chinks are taking money out of China.

The real question is that the jews are the only ones who get a cut from the Chinks 'investing' in the west.
