The non major cities are great. I live in one about 150k population. 99 percent of the population is friendly and very helpful. Towns are more like like close knit communities. Even in the big cities there are some smaller communities. Farms, ranches, and plenty of hardy people who take care of each other regardless of color. My family has been in Texas since before it was even Texas. They officially owned land when it became Mexico and retained it once Texas became independent. It's some 380 acres near Laredo. My family is mainly Hispanic (Mexican). My family that stayed in south Texas stay pretty true to their roots and the other half of my family lives in the Mexican side of Laredo. My immediate family moved to dallas in the 80s and we've been pretty successful. My dad who became a citizen in 2000's always says he's very glad he came to Texas as an immigrant with nothing. Texas gave him the opportunities to buy a home and maintain a decent job as an automotive technician. He doesn't think he would've been able to do the same thing in other states due to their higher costs of living and limited job opportunities. He worked has a ranch hand for awhile before becoming an auto tech. Now my sister's and I are the first in our family to have college degrees and I think it's pretty cool to see how far we've come thanks to the opportunities Texas has provided us. I grew up in South Dallas and came up pretty rough due to area. I still love Dallas and there's lots to do. I went to school in West TX at Texas Tech uni and fell in love with West Texas. Here is where I think true Texans live. There's still ranges and escarpments and rough terrain. The tiny towns and colorful people are littered all over. There's just something special about it.
