It varies wildly by state, even by city. Be absolutely sure about moving down into the deep south because the summers are absolutely miserable. I'd suggest giving New Mexico a try instead. It gets cold in the winter but it's a dry cold so as long as you dress appropriately you don't really feel it. It doesn't "penetrate" the way wet cold does. Summers are a dry heat too so even when it's up in the hundreds it doesn't feel much above the high 80's. And it stays into the 70's at night. Couple that with reasonably cheap land, and beautiful country side and it's a nice state. Lots of non whites but if that's not a problem for you it's a nice place. There's no "Perfect" state, it's all about tradeoffs and deciding what's more important.

I work as a civil engineer in NC. It's a good place to live overall. Land and housing is cheep, and there are plenty of places to live in urban, suburban, and rural environs for a reasonable price. More so on an engineers salary.

The Triad, Charlotte, Raleigh are all good places but the smaller towns have a lot to offer too in quality of life and affordability. You can live well in the mountains, piedmont, or the coast. Though prime spots in any place, and the cities will cost more, you will get a lot more value here than other states.

I actually have some advice for people who want to migrate. I lived in another country for 3 years before moving back.

What you tend to find is that they want to move because they're unhappy with their personal life, they want to start fresh and be someone special (stranger in a strange land).

What you tend to find though is that all the problems in the old country just follow them because they're the same person. If you're unhappy in X there isn't any good reason why you'd be happier in Y unless you undergo some personal development. They tend to blame external reasons rather than have a good look at themselves and really try to be a better person.

At first you will get a lot of attention because you're a foreigner, then when people know you it will just revert back to how it was in your home country because you haven't grown as a person just ran away.

The UK has a higher HDI than the USA when adjusted for per capita. There's no reason you can't have a good life here.

So just have a good think before you move because I can guarantee most people will have a big bubble popped.

It's a lot more spread out than the east coast, and the scenery is A LOT better. The ocean has sunsets, our forests are packed with evergreens, our rivers and streams are full of fish like salmon ans steelhead, herds of large game everywhere, mild climates in summer and winter, no toll roads, no sales tax (in Oregon), and most of the food we eat is grow locally.

If you are serious about being a defender of rights and are dead set on the Navy, I'd recommend becoming a Corpsman then put in a packet to go to the Marine Corps Basic Reconnaisance Course (BRC) and becoming a SARC (Special Amphibious Reconnaisassance Corpsman). SARC's are badass and get to attend tons of schools including some of the best medical training out there.
