Islam was a reaction to the particular kind of Christianity that existed in the middle east. It had a lot of theological problems and often times they didn't participate in ocumenical councils or outright denied them. They weren't trinitarian, their christology didn't include the dogma of two natures. Islam was a direct answer to this. The existence of Islam isn't a problem per se. It's the existence of muslims that is the problem.
