Should the GDR have become an autonomous, free from both the Soviets and West Germany? Considering they were the strongest state in the Eastern bloc despite being bombed to oblivion and paying reparations on top of it, could they have actually successfully realized communism without the burden of the Soviets and lifted sanctions from the West?
The urban planning of Marzahn as the "city of tomorrow" for example sounded really efficient, and it seems for the circumstances it was in, it was. Imagining it at a fully deployed scale, East Germany could have been revolutionary in its goals.

It sucked because they had limited amount of resources from the cold war, and as I mentioned in the OP, having to pay reparations in addition to that. Of course it technically sucked, but it was also successful despite that. The question is, if the circumstances were better, would the GDR have been successful?
