Do Americans really infantilise their 17-21 year olds?

In all the movies parents are still telling their University-aged kids what to do, scolding or penalising them. Plus it looks like Univesity adults live like mid-teenagers in shared rooms.

Is this what you really do? Why?

General sense in the UK is that once you hit 18 your parents don't tell you what to do anymore even if they're supporting you a little. Only Muslims families tell their adult children how to behave.
