This actually is not a huge surprise to me. I lived there for a while. The defense industry is huge. Tons of aerospace tech, but then it trickles down from there so non aerospace/weaponry contractors have congregated there as well. I was surprised by how many black students were there when my sister was going there in the early 2000s. It's probably much worse. Coaches keep recruiting black athletes in and the city has been making old apartment complexes into mini-projects. City-Data's Huntsville board is good to keep up with the goings on there. It was dank in the 80's and 90's solely because spacecamp and science were things people actually cared about. Once that died in the 2000's then came the onslaught of outdoor designer malls, theaters, etc. Now the hipsters are trickling in to parts (ie: Lowe Mill)

There's not really much going for it other than a shit-ton of restaurants, the arsenal, the space center, and hill-side subdivisions if you're rich or housing authority if youre a nigger. Most of the people working there come from Madison which is an actually white mom suburban hellscape
