With most of my friends, it's weed, booze, video games, or music, pretty much in that order. I have friends who spend hundreds of dollars on niche pedals for their instruments, some of them have boards with a dozen pedals on them which would be worth $1000-2000 retail, not even counting the actual instruments and amps.

The point is that not a lot of millennials are inclined to save. That's not always the case, but if you're working for slightly above minimum wage and managed to save 10% of your income, that's barely $1000 per year, and my friends and I are in our mid 20s so that's not a lot of money.

I happen to have a big boy job with terrific benefits and I'm frugal with my money so I've managed to break out of the millennial mold, but I've seen first hand that most people my age piss away their limited disposable income on a daily basis.

I have a Serbian cousin (married in) who used to go on scrap hauls all across the Southern US when he was in his 20's (he's 32 now) and he would cash out at a junkyard in Tampa. He used to make $40k-$60k a haul depending on the car parts he could get. Then he would take his money and blow it all away gambling or getting drunk at bars. The fact that the scrap trade was basically off the books and that it was such a dangerous business with people always trying to backstab you to make a better deal he tried to ever hang onto large sums of money for too long. Also, I'm pretty sure he had ties to Serbian organized crime too, but eh... it's all in the past.
