There was the first Yemeni war going on pretty much from the 60's till the start of the 90's with hundreds of thousands killed.

There was the Algerian civil war, which was shorter but as deadly.

The Syrian civil war is a product of the Arab spring, just like the Yemen, Tunisia, Egyptian and Libyan revolutions were.
