The catholic church was a major repository for polish culture during 50 years of soviet occupation and pointedly anti-pole programs. It was like the one organization that remained independant from soviet control to a large degree. Every time the soviets tried to pull shit with the church in poland mass response followed.

Russia needed polands agricultural production desperatley, at one point 1/3rd of grain consumed in russia came from poland, so they left the church alone. It became a major rallying point and organizer during the mass unrest during the breakup of the soviet union.

Even non-catholic poles are very fond of the church because in poland its as much a patriotic group as it is a religious one.
