The transition from Carter to Reagan was nowhere near as crazy as today. But then again, the media back then tried to maintain certain professional standards and at least some pretense of objectivity. There were some reporters you could have some respect for: David Brinkley, Ted Koppel, Jim MacNeil. Reporters didn't really hate Reagan, they just thought he was a amiable dunce. Reagan knew he could just go around reporters and talk directly to the people.

More similar was when Nixon was President. Reporters hated Nixon and Nixon hated them back. They almost were popping champagne corks when Nixon resigned.

To be fair to Obama, his second term was better than either W's or Clinton's, IMO, and he beats out Carter by a long way: Carter was an unmitigated disaster. I'd have far rather had a third term of Obama than another term of the Clintons.

Withholding judgment on Trump because he hasn't even been in office six months yet. Hopefully, he'll end up somewhere between Bush 41 and Reagan (I can't see him surpassing Reagan, though).

Bush I was a competent administrator, knew his place, and suffered because he wasn't an effective messenger to the middle class. Had he extended an olive branch to Perot, he could have easily continued the Reagan golden era of conservative politics.

Bush II was a good man. People thought he was stupid, but that's because only a very foolish or a very brave man tries to be noble in a place like Washington DC. He went on a crusade that cost us blood and treasure, but like his father before him couldn't communicate the war's importance to the middle class. I miss him the most.

Clinton was a scoundrel. He carries the middle because he was willing to govern as a moderate, and let the conservative congress pass important reforms. Of all the presidents in my short lifetime, he was the most personally corrupt. I admired his audacity.

Trump is incompetent. Trump is unable to pick his battles -- and so his enemies pick them for him. I seriously fear that Trump's failures will lead to a Democrat resurgence, which could prove disastrous in the long run.

Obama was the worst, but because he actively seemed to despise America. He held it in contempt as a place of racism and backwards thinking, that was ennobled only by virtue of electing him twice. Apart from being incompetent at administration -- he wielded the executive branch like a cudgel, leading to scandals like Gunwalker and the IRS targeting scheme -- he actively marched back our gains overseas. If Bush II's gains were hard-won to begin with, Obama turned pyrrhic victories into meaningless sacrifices. And by forcing through the ACA on the back of a fraudulent election in Minnesota, he cast a ticking time bomb into the future that will end only in socialized medicine. Obama was and continues to be the worst, and will be surpassed only if Trump doesn't get his fucking shit together.
