It was actually mostly the fire. To the designer's credit the towers DID survive impacts far worse than they were intended to, and the fact that they didn't just immediately collapse gave rescue teams valuable time to evacuate people below the impact points. IIRC there were something like 10 thousand people working in the towers that morning. We got away with just 3000 deaths.

Back to the fire - the ultimate reason for the collapse of all three towers was their shitty tube-in-tube design with all steel structural supports. Tube-in-tube is a design where all the support is in the core and the outer frame of the building (instead of spread throughout) and the floors are just suspended between the core and the frame. It's a very simple design that can be built very large, very quickly, while using less materials... but it's not very redundant which is why contractors stopped using it in the 80s. Steel and reinforced concrete have very similar structural properties, but extremely different thermal properties. Reinforced concrete doesn't thermally expand as much, it's a better insulator, and it doesn't lose 30-40% of its yield strength at office fire temperatures.

The steel in WTC 1, 2, and 7 thermally expanded from contact with the fires, the beams and trusses became distorted - bending, buckling, and sagging - which significantly reduced their effective strength. When the floors and outer frame started to go, there wasn't any redundant structural support to keep it from failing. Once the collapse started it was all over - skyscrapers are designed to support a mostly-static load, not a mostly-dynamic one.
