Katrina was the perfect test case example for you guys to prep for. Ultimately it all depends on how many utilities go out and how quickly. There is nothing wrong with preparing for the worst to protect those you love.

There are two kinds.

The kind where a blizzard or something knocks out power, stops the grocery stores from getting stocked, and prevent gas pumps from working.

For that the solution is as simple as keeping your cupboard fully stocked and filling your tank when it's half full. A half tank of gas can get you pretty far away, hopefully out of the danger.

Any worse than that, learn to camp with minimal supplies and keep those supplies packed where you can quickly get them.

I've been thinking about prepping a lot lately. The more I think about it the less convinced I am that there's any chance that this modern civilization will continue. And just because most people don't think our civilization will ever collapse doesn't mean it won't happen. Not even the smartest people in the world can ever predict something like a market bubble, those same people will never predict society imploding.

Anyway, the best way to prepare for SHTF is to learn skills that will come in handy when society no longer exists. A doctor has a far greater chance of surviving than some larper who spends every cent he has on canned food and guns. I recommend looking back to the 1800s to see what sort of skills will be the most valuable, farming and cattle herding for example are always a safe bet.

If you're serious about surviving then get yourself a cottage out in the countryside, as populated areas will generally be death traps. Go somewhere where you can grow food, the west coast is great over all due to the lower population density and mountains. The Appalachian mountains will be really safe too.

Lastly, team up with like minded people, become a part of a community. It's good for anyone. Prepping in the sense of natural disasters, fires, electrical outs, water shortage. These things happen every few years, more or less - depending on where you live.

Not everything is WORLD WAR III level prepping. Have a backup gas canister stove or BBQ if you need to cook without electricity or gas sometime. Have medicine and some extra canned food. Low level prep like this can save you a ton of headaches later.

When it comes to SHTF prepping most of these idiots forget that they live close to people. If you don't have an entire neighbourhood of armed citizens behind a wall, then your supply stashes are fucked. Roaming mobs of people will fuck you. Militias will fuck you. Gangsters will fuck you.

If you're serious about SHTF prepping at all you need to have a getaway far from people and step one of any major crisis is getting there and hunkering down.

With that said most people into prepping are treating it as a hobby. Yes they're kooky, no their plans won't work in actual SHTF, but for 99% of problems they are actually prepared. Fair enough.

the USA and frankly most of the northern hemisphere is one Carrington Event away from prolonged power outages which would be a social & economic disaster , its one of the few apocalypse scenarios that could actually happen in your life time, and things would certainly get ugly should giant swathes of the USA be without power for weeks if not months. hell things would get ugly within a few hours let alone days

Having a 72 hour emergency kit is self preservation. Making the jump to self-reliance is far more difficult, and rarely works as imagined. So its better to learn by doing, now, while you have a safety cushion.
