4chan is majority shitposting, it will happen regardless of what you do, just need to learn to look past it a bit. Personally I found flags helped, I could get an idea of where people were coming from with their point of view it added at least a little, being able to change my flag to pirate adds nothing except some possible groupthink BS but I doubt that'll happen to any extent.

Whatever their original purpose, I grew to like the flags. I enjoyed talking with people from around the world, knowing I was talking with someone with a totally different worldview was always interesting to me. Maybe Im wrong but if that was their goal it didnt seem to work.
