Lacrosse, Hockey, Rugby, and American/Canadian/Australian Football are the best sports for young men to play. Baseball is good as a character building sport but not for making you tougher per se. Wrestling makes young men hardened as well.

when I was 5-10 we played cageball.
it was this game we made up to play on the elementary school "football" field which was just a narrow strip of grass with one side having a chain link fence.
tackles were illegal but grabbing/punches/kicks were legal.
it was kind of like a cross between cagefighting and football.
passing was illegal but you could hand the ball off.
if someone went down the play stopped to help them get up and would resume from a handoff at the last point the ball was at.

then at each end of the field was a tree guarded by a goalie.
running the football through the goal was 5 points but you had to get your whole body through.
throwing the ball through the goal was 2 points.;

best game. kids need more of that these days.
