Ignorant fag here.
Can anyone tell me why Hawkeye and Trapper from MASH are captains when they were drafted into the army?
Is there a backstory where they went through officer training or something?

They are doctors, they aren't going to be drafted as grunts.

they are surgeons, surgeons need command of their operating theater and are given a rank so they can do so
they had training but they just dont give a fuck about the mans rules

This, if it's anything like the British Army then doctors, lawyers etc start at Captain. They still do basic officer training though.

>It was (and still is) common for civilian professionals (lawyers, chaplains, nurses and doctors) to basically take the 90-day officers' course. Doctors start out as Captains, other professionals as 1st Lieutenants. This wasn't intended to make them proper military men, it was to get them used to military procedure and the system within which they were expected to work. Unsurprisingly, it didn't always take. In most cases (chaplains particularly) they are not expected to have any real command responsibility, which means the rest of the hierarchy can ignore them until needed.
literally google it

It comes up all the time, particularly in the Officers Club episode.
These are surgeons... Anyone with a 4-year degree can apply for OCS and if accepted become an officer

Doctors drafted into the military have college degrees and a need to command people in life saving situations.
Captains.
Lieutenant get me that knife or this man is going to due.
