Take a scenario where nukes are used, all US naval and air assets have taken too many losses and the main fighting is all on the ground, the Russia military is far better trained and equipped for that scenario.

US ground forces will fall pretty rapidly once air and naval power is reduced to an insignificant amount. The power of the US military is it's ability to use land/naval/ground forces simultaneously, but the weak point is that in any prolonged war against a real foe (say Russia) where the ground forces will eventually wont be able to rely on that support, their weakness will show.


The US army will be useless in this scenario, it'll be down to the US marines to fight the bulk of Russia's ground forces. But the marines wont be able to take advantage of Warthogs and Apaches in this situation, so they're kind of fucked as well. (GL with slow flying jets and halos with Russian air defense)

By annexing Crimea their defied the status quo regarding the borders which was present since the end of WW2. That has some serious implication on the Balkans and in Eastern-Europe.
By propping up Syria with Iran Russia has projected power into the Middle-East, and it might work better than the clueless shock and awe bullshit the US did in Iraq, which only won Iran a new Shia ally. 1. We annexed Crimea and got away with it completely. Virtually all sanctions imposed on us are to our own benefit in medium-to-long term, even though US certainly was in position 3 years ago to actually collapse our economy, and may be still.

2. We've allied with Iran and its puppet Shia militias, and despite theoretically overwhelming military superiority of hostile powers around Syria, we've achieved our goal of nipping in the bud any gas-pipeline-to-Europe projects meant to undermine us.
