He is the textbook example of a bureaucrat. If the color grey would have a personification, Schulz would be it.

He is straight out of Brussels, generally considered a place where third-tier politicans are parked to wait out their "career" until they can retire.

EU-politicans are generally considered lobbyists (something that is almost universally seen as bad in Europe) and working for the interests of mega-business rather than the "normal" people and yet now his slogans are "people first" or w/e... no one believes that for a second.

He is absolutely pro-immigation to the point of making Merkel a hard-core nationalist.

He was incredibly hyped by the Media when he first "appeared" on the national playground.

He has since been figurehead for a couple country elections that his party consequently lost, which fell back on him too giving him the image of a loser.

Honest answer? Germans are desperate for a new person at the helm who deals with the migrant crisis. Schulz came in and his first statements sort of said "let's make Germany great again" with hints of ending the migrant crisis. But then in the weeks after he was crowned the socialist leader, the media started to report about what he actually stands for and people knew he was much worse than Merkel.

Also, the economy is good, it is nearly summer and the illegals coming to Germany are still only very few, while we are continously deporting migrants (granted, not enough... due to SChulz's party being against deportations). So people want this trend to continue. With Schulz at the helm, borders might be opened up again and migrants might be flooding in again with no deportations at all.

He got a short popularity spike when his braindead party tried to copy Trump's campaign strategy (I'm not making this shit up, they literally took Trump memes, shooped Schulz on them and translated them into German) but after people realized how fucking cringeworthy that was, they went back to supporting Mama Merkel.

The borders are reasonably closed. We just need to invest a bit more in the GReek and Bulgarian land border and border checks. And then there is the Libya shitshow. This one can also be solved, if we invest in Tunisia and Egypt - give them money to care for the sea "rescues" and deport them back. Those countries will do that, if you hand them money. Money and investments is all they want.

The way he was introduced to the public made it sound as if he was actually interested in bringing about an end to the German experiment with neoliberalism and its export of it to the rest of Europe, but then he turned out to be another Schröderesque third way social democrat, proposing, if anything, minor cosmetic operations on a fundamentally broken system. That they stayed intentionally quiet on the federal party's agenda so as to not disturb campaigning in the states turned out to be a tactical mistake as well.

The party already fielded people like Schulz in 2013, 2009 and 2005 and they lost every time. They'll keep losing until they acknowledge that their base correctly so considers the 1998-2005 era a betrayal of the party's historical goals and ethos, and Schulz is either not willing or able to stand up to the right wing of the SPD to deliver a change. There's no way to compete with Merkel in the center - the Greens and the Free Democrats have tried and they are/were facing extinction over it. AfD understood this, so they've dedicated themselves to chipping away at the party's right flank and it paid off quite handsomely.

Other factors: Schulz doesn't currently hold any office other than party chairman, so there's no reason for the media to cover him over any cabinet member, state PM or prominent MP.

Merkel benefits greatly from the perception that continental Europe's surroundings have gone mad.
