Illinois population = 12,859,995; total murders = 744 (rate of 5.8 per 100K)

Chicago population within city limits = 2,725,000; Chicago murders in 2015 = 468.

Illinois without Chicago = 276 murders for 10,134,995 people, or a rate of 2.7.

And that's going to go up a lot for 2016, since Chicago had 762 murders. If the rest of the state stays roughly the same, the rate will be around 8.1, or one of the highest in the entire nation.

I've heard loads of stories about criminals in the lower 48 going there to evade capture. It's wide and open, not many people, lots of places to be isolated etc. So i'd imagine that has some effect.
