Things that were much, much worse:

- Speed
- Websites
- Search Engines
- Operating Systems

Things that were better:

- Pretty much everything else

It had this raw, new feel to it. It was so unpolished. But that's when everything was forming and before Big Brother had his eyes and ears on every fucking thing you did. I used to run sploits back then without any regard to being tracked. Broke into mail servers, etc and was never even contacted by any agencies.

Now the most dangerous thing I do online is browse /pol/.

In the really early days, early 80's, it was awesome. Everyone online was a researcher or a government employee or a college student. There were very few idiots as the masses had no access. You actually needed a bit of computer knowledge even to get online.

The AOL came and shitted the place up for eternity.
>>
It made Terry Davis seem sane an normal.

So, yes. Because after all CIA niggers glow in the dark and you CAN talk to God with an operating system AND IT'S NOT REAL MODE MIT NIGGERS.

Yes, I think so. I was watching that documentary about the skater magazine Big Brother, and near the end of they were heavily implying and then later outright stating that the internet came and changed the way people consumed media.

But there was something they didn't seem to mention or even touch on, which I guess was because it wasn't what they were making a documentary about. The internet use to be like that. I remember the later 90's and early 00's as being very wry, zine-like and easily "over the line" of acceptability.

Now, though, the internet is like an ATM interface.

OMFG stuff was way more fun back then. Shit was way hackable. You could write scripts to kick people out of chat rooms send them viruses just for fun. Joke programs were everywhere. AOL sucked but gave you some cool chatrooms. IRC was beginning. Netscape was the shit and FFS stickdeath.com. hahah. The net now is boring and sterile. You have to go deep and proxy up for any real fun anymore and even then its just to try and pop kiddie diddlers.

>>129666285
Yes, for the simple fact that while information was easier to access, it still involved a lot of skill and effort on your part in order to find what you were looking for.

People these days take it for granted when they can just type in the first three words of a vague thought and get 400 million results for exactly what they were thinking of. Back in the 90s if you wanted to look up sources for a paper, you had to already have a very clear idea of what you were looking for and what resources to use in order to find them.

I remember when I was in high school, our comp lit class we had to do a 30 page research paper for our final project. I did a whole thing on the technology of warfare in the 19th/20th century, really great piece on the development of firearms and artillery, the transition from battlefield combat to trench warfare to total war in the early 20th century, etc. Before I even went near a computer I spent days in the library combing through books, and it was only when I wanted to start looking for more modern news and information that I started researching military resources online.

Before search engines were really overhauled in at the turn of the century, sites still spread largely through word of mouth, the spread of memes was slower, but more deliberate. You'd burn through an AOL disk going deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole, never knowing what you'd stumble across next... maybe dancing hamsters, maybe grainy gifs and midis, maybe ultra low res porn, or maybe tips for being an evil overlord - no one knew what tomorrow would bring, but we were all waiting anxiously to see who would find the next big thing first.

There also wasn't any social media bullshit bogging down the whole net. People weren't posting journals or posting selfies. People who hosted sites were focused on what they could do for you, not how much attention you could give them. It was all about being the best source for whatever niche thing you were trying to do.

Jesus christ don't listen to any of these idiots.

Oldfag here who's been using computers to connect to other computers since the 80s. Other than the comfy feeling of a local BBS, the internet has never been better. It's so fast, there's so much information, there's so much interconnectivity, there's so much software, there's so much pocket-sized hardware to use it from, it's just a fucking incredibly transition.

I miss calling up the local board and chatting with my local bros and doing the meet-ups without worrying about trolling and murdering and perverts, but that's about it. That aspect was replaced by the fact that all of my NORMAL friends and my NORMAL family can also now use the internet and communicate with me, something that was never possible back then.

Internet was a new thing. Almost nobody used it, so most people thought killers were lurking on the internet waiting to get your information.

People are comfortable with it now so they feel free to behave like they do.

Also it's partially like a little spotlight for all the normies who've always dreamed of being a celebrity. It's the same reason criminals would allow their faces to be shown on the show cops even though they were portrayed in a horrible light. Idiots want to be famous, even if it's for bad things

for me, there was a period between our slightly early adoption of broadband (my town is slightly wealthy, and i had educators in the family and was generally into computers) and the social media era (i think livejournal was available, but not much else), and more importantly, the standardization of everything, that was very comfy, maybe two or three years in the early to mid 2000s, think i found /b/ a little after the end of that period. everything now is just woman and cucks complaining, for the most part, this place has changed a lot less, which i enjoy, as an autist who copes poorly with change.

This is what ruined the Internet by opening the gates for normies:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September

Spoiler: the concept of "too many users flood a community at once and don't integrate so even more users come and think the new users are how it's supposed to be" is also what really fucked up 4chan, and I guess is happening to the Western world right now.

hell yeah. i was able to talk and connect with people all over the world. i had friends in italy and brazil i met in the metallica.com chatroom, i met tons of people in yahoo chat, had some girl in texas i talked to for years send me my first hair dye (punk af back int he day), met some girl in portland while i lived on the coast and we even met eachother once. there were tons of real, deep connections to be made. and when it came to sharing content or yourself in general learning some html was the only way to fly, so you had to actually invest your time to get yourself out there.

creation, connection, exploration.

the web used to be something special, now its just a means to control people and extract profit.

Not really. I was a social outcast. She was a social outcast. I used to be super awkward around chicks. And then I wasn't awkward anymore. I was 15 years old. Back in the day you were able to more things like host your own mailserver which is nice. It's cheaper now to just buy a vps though, and if you really want you can get a decent isp that will let you run a mailserver or whatever you want.

It's just nostalgic bullshit man. People forget the bad parts.

The Internet's downfall truly started in 2008.
The advent of the smartphone, or more specifically the iPhone began the degeneration as anyone had the Internet in their hands without any need to adapt to the culture that already was living and breathing.
Before 2008, the masses viewed the Internet as something for the nerds or businessmen, now it is a staple in everyone's lives as the main outlet of information. Social media was and still is one of the final nails in the coffin, it propels all it's user ego and narcissm to unprecedented levels, along with the pseudo-social interactions that come with trying to mix the masses, with the user, the user being the interface of communication. As you on the Internet are a user technically, but back then it meant so much more, you were in a sense your own character, with your avatar and username. The blurring of the lines between reality and 'cyberspace' so to speak kills the fun, kills anonymity, and kills the mystery.
2008 also began the push for the removal of net neutrality, and look at us now.
Feels. Bad. Man.

In the beginning there was only one browser to write webpages for, but it didn't do very much.

A shit ton of text based games similar to zork, a bunch of which are still around.

90's, no. The chat rooms and forums of that era were very primitive. There are things that were simply better now than there were back then. Embedding images and easy file hosting are two things I don't think we could ever return to.

00's internet: definitely. It had the perfect blend of necessities to have thriving communities and extremely strong clustering of people to a multitude of places they enjoyed.

What was great about the 00's internet is that if you didn't like a place, you just went somewhere else. There was always a place for you.

The current internet's big problem is that so much of social media has consumed everything else to the point where no one has to leave their little website to go anywhere. People maybe visit one or two sites a day, and then never go out to search for anything themselves and maybe learn about a community that's interesting or someone who may have the same tastes that you do.
It's a tragedy, really. Making sub-communities on social media platforms is never the answer because it ultimately means that portions of social media that have nothing to do with your topic at hand will leak in. This is why every modern community is overrun with SJW and political shit: That is the platform that normies already spout their political opinions, so why wouldn't they bring it into the community about car repairs or video games or etc?

The era of being able to tell someone "That's off-topic, please move to a forum which talks about politics or social justice instead of posting about it here" was amazing. It shut down so many moral busybodies who wanted to drag political signaling into every conversation. I miss being able to do that.

For the most part, no.

It had all the same crap except a thousand zillion times slower.

It took three hours to download a 3mb MP3 song file. And if someone picked up the phone during those 3 hours in your house? Start again.

The only thing better was you didn't have to sign up for everything no matter what it was. That is severely annoying, and did start very early in the internet - but now it's reached epic levels. 4chan is one of the ONLY sites left where you can write anything without signing up.

And not to be mean 4chan, but you're kind of a terrible site. lol

Also, Google. Google didn't own youtube. And Google didn't matter either. It become the 'only' search engine over night.

Not because it was better than metacrawler or whatever, it wasn't, at all. It got advertised the crap out of and people were basically tricked into believing it was better than everything else.

To this day I find it extremely suspicious and wouldn't be surprised if it really WAS some crazy conspiracy funded by a government.

For you young people who were taught the internet started in the 60s, don't believe it.

It's technically true that arpnet and that crap started early but it WAS NOT the internet.

The internet as you know it, web pages, downloading files, browsers, etc. the actual internet, that started in like 1991 or 1992 - when html was invented.

That's when it really mattered. That's when the real internet came about.

AND

To be even more honest, that's not even when it blossomed. SOME people got on board with windows 3.whatever but MOST people only got on board with Windows 95.

That was THE version of windows that made both home computers, and the internet, a worldwide thing. That was THE moment most people bought a home comp and the net.

A few people here and there had a home comp before then, or ran dos games, but trust me, I was there.

I've been on the internet since those times, and have lived on here ever since.

yeah, I agree about the forum bit. Also it just seemed like moderators back then commanded more respect than admins of Facebook groups do today. The newcomer to a forum had to contribute regularly and punctually and play by the rules to be respected, whereas the Facebook group, with its ridiculously large number of members and ability to like posts, is more democratic and fast-paced. Everyone wants to put in his two cents, which are often snippy little comments rather than something substantive and thought-out. The end result is just grandstanding rather than something meaningful.

Yep, I quit after the combat update. SOE trashed it. In what other game could you have a chef character who had harvesting machines on multiple planets gathering his resources for crafting which he would then sell in his shop in a building he could plant pretty much anywhere on terrain outside of the static towns, and then on another character be an elite warrior and ravage player created cities and their bases with your mates? Ughhhhh good times!

And seriously, the guy killed himself? Lel.

Yeah scrambled porn was all I had for nudity. And I watched it with friends.

Transplant me into today and I'd probably see my friends 1/8 as much, and we'd all be jacking off to gay porn in our sexually confused teen years for that 7/8 time.

The boomers didn't know how degenerate the Internet was; they were so focused on moderating TV that this flew under their radar. Yup, was an EQ1 fag when it dropped in 99 for a couple years. Was actual role playing then, and that game kicked ass. Had a hot cleric in-game wife and I was one of the server top warrior tanks. Was nice because not many people had good enough internet or computers so was a select type of people. WoW was quite the opposite which is why I never liked it, too many fuckfaces on it.
Tried many mmos since, was never the same. Still looking and waiting for something that captured that spirit, probably will never happen again though I guess.

Its really a shame. There's a handful of websites you need in the modern internet.

Amazon (stuff to buy), Social (Twitter, Facebook), Youtube (entertainment), Wikipedia (research/interests). Those few will do everything you need, for the most part.

This has caused me to feel very impersonal to most people on the internet. You don't get a connection to anyone because its a sea of people. Its the difference between going into a comfortable little corner shop and talking to people with the same interests as you, and going to a massive packed convention where there's too many people and its too loud to talk to anyone. Just keep moving, buy buy buy, every interaction reduced to a transaction, whether it be social or economic. Its fucking awful.

I'm glad I have a good group of internet buddies I made friends with in the mid-late 2000's on a forum. We formed a gaming group that went on to expand to 200 members, though its significantly shrunk now, and we just play whatever we want as friends. We ramp up every expansion for Path of Exile, and we're going to ramp way back up for Star Citizen though, so it'll be just like good old times.

>>129675860
Meta answer. If I was new I would answer you, but if I was not new, I wouldn't answer you, I could also just troll you by answering you, pretending to be new, and turning your comment around on you. Without this last sentence, you would then reply to this with a very short and lame insult. And if you're younger than I am, you probably still will because you can't help it. And if you've read this long I've wasted your time. And if you haven't read this far, you are likely to reply in exactly the way I said you would, proving your a 12 year old. And if you don't reply at all, I don't have to hear your lame insult.

Ball is in your court.

Well Im not missing the modem days too much but remember when when only shit tier "you deserved it" websites required you to load 3 spyware scripts starting to connecting to an exponential amount of other libraries from 4th parties connecting back insecure crosssite scripts to 2nd or to 5th parties, embedding 3 layers of iframes in your page and binding popups to every imaginable key connected you could possibly press that will start to resize your screens and tab around in your windows unless you have 3 layers of software just do be allowed to scroll on the site and display classic some classic ol media and have the site displayed with some actual readable layout?

Also lack of normies and cucks shitting everything up and eating like sheep into censorship and data collection schemes like forcing you to make accounts bound to your heartbeat if you refuse to upload DNA samples and demanding everything to be dumbed down and family friendly for 5 year old retarded kids or black people sure made the place more comfortable
