I agree that BNW is a lot closer to where we're headed, though it doesn't get things completely right either.

A lot of people don't seem to realize that the proles in 1984 are controlled much the same way as in BNW, minus the genetic engineering and conditioning. They are fed the same diet of crappy lowest common denominator entertainment that the citizens of the World State are given. Orwell had a lower opinion of the masses than Huxley did, probably reflecting a lifetime of frustration in fighting for socialism. Oceania leaves the masses alone trusting they'll never be a danger as long as they stay poor and ignorant. But the World State takes no such risks. Everyone regardless of class is carefully bred and conditioned.

I don't think we're headed to the caste system of BNW, automation will perform much of what the lower castes in the World State accomplish. And sleep conditioning, so crucial to BNW's setting, is now considered fringe science. But there are other ways to accomplish the same objective. I do believe we will get away from natural births. It will be billed as liberating for women just as birth control was. And over time more and more of the work of raising children will be handled by the state, where they can be raised and conditioned exactly the way Progress demands them to be: free of all bigotry, traditional values, and attachments to anything that isn't obtainable for them lest they become unhappy.
