communism attracts a lot of intelligent people with misguided ambition. it always ends poorly when the people in power realize just how impossible their aims really were, so they instead must devote more effort to keeping order and maintaining a facade of "True Socialism" until eventually the thing hemorrhages, famine sets in, and the masses start begging to go back to how things were before.

Their ideology may be stupid but you can't ignore the fact they are strongest in academia. They will have above average IQs and would generally be considered intelligent in areas outside of politics. Somethign must be attracting them to this ideology, and we need to convince them away from it.
