There are several distinct dialects. Bokmal is formalized, standardized more Danish recent langnuage implemented for reading and writing. Nynorsk is older. Most who speak Nynorsk are rural people uninfluenced by city standardization. No one speaks nynorsk. People speak their dialects. Nynorsk is a standardized written language based on a collection of samplings from how people spoke throughout Norway. Our state sanctioned commie tv station is probably the only place where you will hear news anchors speak in a way based on the written nynorsk. Northern norway has good dialects imo. Girls from Finnmark and about. Guys from area sound good also. Halling is the best dialect there is hands down but it's pretty neutral in regards to gender. I think of hobbits when hearing them etc.

Language evolve, how we spoke 1000 years ago isnt how we speak today. Nynorsk was made by combining different spoken dialects with old norse, which is exactly what you seem to have endorse by you saying that icelandic is closest to true norwegian.

If you dont know that there was no standardized norwegian language in the beginning of the 1800s im not sure what to tell you. We had written language earlier, like mellomnorsk, however those fell out of use during our time in union with Denmark. Attempts to revitalize norwegian language didnt go far beyond using norwegians words with mostly danish except in far off regions until we reached the 19th century in which we got nynorsk and bokmål, with nynorsk being the first of the two.
