Changes in consumer habits are vital for businesses to plan ahead. There are thousands of studies on this stuff every year. Here's a similar article on the decreasing consumption of junk food and the cost this has for supermarkets.

It's ironic that millennials are breaking the stereotypes and criticisms the West has for being consumerism obsessed, fast food scarfing, & overweight which the media is now upset about after decades of mocking it. Fuck boomers.
>>
>>129579176
>>129580353
Generations are not clear cut like if you're born one year you're gen x if you're born on Jan 1st the next year you're millennial. Generations have approximations of birth years but your generation is determined by your peer personality and the events that you most feel shaped you. The millennial birth range is 1982-1999 but that doesn't mean some people born in 1982 aren't gen x.

For example, my aunt was born in 1942 which is the first year of birth for the boomer generation. However, my aunt is vastly different from my mom, a true boomer born in 1950. My aunt most certainly has the peer personality of a Silent generation individual.
>>
>>129579583
This. Applebee's food is literally all prepackaged stuff they heat up and dump on top of pasta or whatever, plus a miller light, plus a tip, I'm paying 25 for the privilege of eating surrounded by tacky decor and screaming kids

For 35 I could go to the local tapas place a mile down the road, get a meal made from scratch, great microbrew, and eat with a live pianist.
>>
>>129580353
>>129581341
1980s-1994* is what wikipedia says, 1993-1994 are the cut-offs most sociologists use.
>>
>>129580879

nah the entitlement comes from the amount of shit they expect for their money

they expected to be given gourmet food - faster than can possibly be cooked, served by a waiter who is utterly flawless and constantly catering to their every need at every possible second. For a low low price.

Thats why most of these new restaurants fail horribly - they try to deliver the world for a horribly low price.. just to cater for millenial delusion.

shit that millenials say:

* I bet that only cost £2 in raw materials lol you're robbing me
* The decor in here is not to my taste give me a free meal.
* Can you go and reheat my sandwich i bought from another store so I can sit down here and eat for free?
* Can you use my puhere fair trade himalayan tea leaves instead and use your hot water and time to pour me a free drink? I'll only be here on my mac for about 14 hours on a 6 seater table on my own dont worry about it

Blaming millennials for everything is the new cool thing. I cant blame them though, the vocal minority ruins it for the rest of us, and makes the entire generation so easy to ridicule
>>
>>129581532
That's what most sociologists use, but not historians. 18-22 years separates each generation, according to the research of Strouse and Howe, which is utterly exhaustive and outlines a cycle of 18 generations in 5 cycles over the course of American history dating back to the mot 1500s and the puritan generation
>>
>>129581568
If it's impossible to deliver what we want, then why not just do it better than other restaurants?

Our money is going to go somewhere, so why isn't it going to your establishment?

It's not our job to convince ourselves that your establishment is worth our money and time.

>>
>>129581940
This rarebro, millenials don't have any disposable income and by the looks of it they won't get it either. The first thing people cut down on when the economy takes a turn for the worst is eating out.

Boomers destroyed everything.
>>
>>129578587
Guess it's a side effect of the retirement age moving further and further back. You can't move up in an organization when spots aren't vacating, today's youth aren't getting the opportunity to become as stable as the previous generation did.
>>
>>129581083
Correction millennial *women* can't cook.

To add to the thread, these chain restaurants are failing because one they are shit and most people have wised up that most of these chains offer mediocre food and peoples tastes have generally improved.
As a kid my family used to go out to places like apple bees and Pizza Uno in the late 90's. It was just the novelty of eating out and for kids it was fun/big deal even though it was not exactly gourmet food. Now my parents would never set foot in such a restaurant.

I eat out pretty often like once a week, but yeah if I'm going to spend my money why not get decent food for you and or/your date/friend. In my city there's plenty of cheap and good Asian/Indian as well as decent pubs that offer good cheap food and drinks.

On that note there's this late night taco/Japanese food stand near where I live. The place is kinda sketchy and popular with the munchies crowd. It's run by this grizzled Japanese chef who makes stuff like Teriyaki Tacos and does sushi & Mexican food both.
>>
>>129582093
Applebee's is alright.

Can never understand why people get so uppity about perfectly inoffensive food.
Even McDonald's gets more of a defense.

They're not "entitled" to my service, but I had some decent tendies and french fries there, and a good sit-down with my family.
>>
>>129581489

What money? Millenials don't have any money. It is not worth it for these people to spend so much time and effort and never even see a penny for it.

When was the last time you saw a millennial give a 10$ tip? 5$ is extremely high for these people. A waiter who does customer service for millennial at a coffee shop or whatever and receive a grand total of 15$ an hour in tips. The same level of service could be selling high end luxury cars to late boomers and early Xers for easily upwards of 25$ an hour.

the labour costs involved to cater to millenials is not worth the money i'll get from them. At the same time they fight to increase minimum wages - the more likely I am to not give a fuck about them as a consumer base.

Applebees food is pretty generic and bland. They have like one thing i like their.

BWW is expensive as fuck and the quality of the food isn't very good. It's over $20 for a Budweiser and 15 wings.

Mediocre prepackaged food that is sold at thin margins to get people in the door. They make their money off of volume and soda and alcohol. The biggest selling point is the low price (a bit more than fast food), convenient suburban location, and chain consistency across the country. When my parents visited me they didn't want to try the awesome Italian place downtown, they wanted to go to Applebee's attached to their hotel because they knew what they were getting.

I don't understand it but whatever.
>>
>>129584162
McDonald's are the only fast food workers in my town that actually deserve $15 an hour. I can't remember the last time i waited 20 minutes for an order, my food was cold or my meal was fucked up.

Every other fast food place in my town is staffed by meth heads and high school kids who don't give a rats ass.

It is because shitty restaurants were made for shitty people like your dad.

This goes back to ww2 times, when women stopped cooking because they had to go out to work. Then, all this microwave food and fast food started shortly after the war. Meanwhile, TV commercials were designed to tell women they should be busy doing other stuff instead of cooking. Boomers were born into a world transitioning from nuclear families to one where women work and fast food was becoming normal. It's no wonder that all boomers became fat and shitty degenerates. Millennials are trying to bring back family values like cooking healthy meals at home.

But for the most part, the reason Millennials are abandoning these chain restaurants is that they are going to places that are more hipster or cater more to the vegan diet.

Here's why they are failing.

Millennials are mostly now living in cities or urban areas for ease of transportation and convenience.
Many of these causal dining places were located in suburbia or in shopping malls which are also dying with the idea people would be driving to them. That an in the city you have far more options for food be it restaurants, local markets, and even fast food/delis.

You did good. You should have phoned up corporate too, because thats NOT company policy, and that guy would at least be questioned by the higher ups.

I worked at a Canadian Tire and they tried to take a used oil filter that had obviously been cleaned out with parts cleaner after it was used on a car, and when I pointed out it was used, and shouldnt have been accepted as a return (It was give to me in a pile of stuff to put back on shelves) I was told to give it to the garage because we obviously can sell it on the floor, and a signature was put on the box by the store manager. The guy who controls 50% of everything at the top, along with the general manager who controls the other 50%.

I gave it to the parts manager, my direct boss, and his response was "He must have rocks in his head". We never put it on a car, and I didnt last much longer.

cant* sell it on the floor

They wanted to put it on someones car, who came in for an oil change, without them knowing. A used oil filter has gasoline mixed into the oil, which makes contact with the seal, and then erodes the rubber seal. This could cause total failure, and your oil suddenly pours out in the middle of the highway while youre going 100mph.

The auto-service industry is fucked.

I worked at a service station doing tires. Just general stuff like tire replacement and repair wheel alignments and wheel weighting. Man I felt bad when we were told to up sell unnecessary services to people. I saw a guy sell an old lady on a brake job into getting an entirely new wheel hub assembly. Charged for the brake disc and pad, then the service fee then the hub for a job that was realistically only a new brake pad. I've seen way too many of these people upsell the shit and talk bad about the customer cuz they "deserved it" because they didn't know any better or didn't know as much about cars. Not necessarily in the kids themselves, just how they were being brought up... teachers... parenting... schooling etc.

I'd say the line is somewhere around '85-'86...

Its the shit value they offer. BWW sucks fucking ass, I their wings are garbage. It is a fun environment for college kids, I guess Applebees has mediocre food now, they weren't great years ago but the quality was better. Now, I only go to Applebees after 10pm for cheap appetizers...Pretzels w/ beer cheese dip is the only reason I go. Most of the places I go to are like the ones I frequented as a child, local franchises...mainly Bar & Grills. But even then, their menus are becoming pretentious shitfests. A place known for burgers 20 years ago is now serving flatbread with avocado and ancho chile lime sauce. They, like other people, have watched too many food shows where they think they need to be Top Chef. I am not buying Risotto at a bar, I would go to a proper restaurant for that. They are trying to be something they aren't and not focusing on what they are good at and what gave them the notoriety. Remember when TGIFriday's was the place to eat, but now no one wants to go so they had to offer Unlimited appetizers due to their shit menu. The corporate restaurant's have no cohesive vision on their offerings and just try to mimic popular culture.

More like I paid $15 for an overlooked burger and 10 French fries, I wait for 45 minutes to get my fucking check, the appetizer shows up a minute before my meal, I get zero attention from the waitress when all I want is a refill, and some 45 year old woman is there with three kids as they scream and cry for the whole restaurant to hear and every other non millenial demographic puts up with it pretending it's cute. AND as a final gift for visiting their shitty franchise, I get the shits.

Fuck that. Fuck your shitty restaurants. The free market is driving you out of business. Now that it's working against you instead of for you, you're bitching about it and want to blame someone. Peddle garbage and get thrown into the trash.

Lack of religion and sense of community, because of this now everyone thinks they are their own personal Jesus Christ despite ironically Christ's sacrifice being all about this. One of the big reasons professional victim blaming is now rampant.

Yeah I bet you have a great restaurant. That's why you're shitposting on 4chan at 9am on a Monday and bitching about customers you claim you don't even want.

Hint: if someone brags about a "loyal customer base" it means they have shit to show for their marketing efforts and they survive on the same 10 elderly couples who eat there on their night out once a week. Enjoy their 401(k) while they're still alive, because in ten years you're going to be staring at a balance sheet with a triple digit liability from the bank and running your hand through your thinning hair wondering how the fuck you're going to last until next quarter. You'll make a Facebook page and make big announcements to no one and get a smattering of likes from family members and one or two friends who feel bad at you having invested your life into a restaurant and having nothing to show for it.

Your legacy is a building that drove you into bankruptcy. Sad!
>>
Yeah I'm just gonna make my own or get some $0.60 wings of comparable quality from wingstop and a 40 and have me a little picnic on my favorite hill with my favorite people. Sure beats spending twice that to wait for a longer time to eat in the presence of fading gen Xers anf boomers erasing themselves in their sports culture.

>You're getting Millennial confused with Gen Z. Millennials are between like 1983-1994.

Then why were there only 2 generations born between 1943 and 1983 (Baby Boomers and gen X)?

If you want a good definition of a millennial it's the generation who reaches young adulthood after the boomers have finished making a mess of things. All the while getting blamed for the problems they've inherited. This includes problems like the 2008 financial crisis which we still haven't recovered from -
we're on the verge of a second major recession.

Neil Howe, who coined the term "millennial", states that the millennial generation was born between 1983-2003.

So much this.
If you have a choice between burger king and applebees, why would you ever go to applebees?
BK has better burgers, faster service, and the "restaurant" isn't any fancier at applebees.
And BK isn't even that good, but merely OK.

Yep, this. It's like the people who try to say the "youth" killed shopping malls. No, it was NIGGERS.
>>
>>129599717

to be fair, if he runs a business he probably won't be there on a monday since those are really slow. most general managers i know will take that as their one day off, and owners are hardly ever around.

if his restaurant is anything like the one where I work, the clientele literally doesn't matter because the vast majority are here doing weekly vacation rentals. the 700 people who show up for lunch will literally stand outside and wait for an hour until a table opens up. if they're unhappy and never want to come back, who cares, because next week there will be hundreds of thousands of different people in the area.

Christ my parents used to let me go explore my neighborhood w/ friends where we'd go to construction sites and steal things out of dumpsters full of god knows what kind of hazard then use those materials we found to build fucked up tree forts on private property.

These fucks scammed my team out of all the charity money because of some last minute change to how you donate money. Well millineals don't have any money. Period. There's always some article now about how they don't buy houses, or cars, or they don't frequent fucking Applebees or TGI Fridays! Yea no shit.
And of course it's always blamed on them. They don't do it right or something.
Couldn't possibly be that the economy is absolutely trash beyond belief and all the kids are poor. Noooo! They must just be lazy or some shit!
Too lazy to go to TGI Fridays!
The restaurants listed here are the most preppy, fab, bullshit restaurants around. The servings are small. And it's ultra expensive for what you get.
No I don't imagine these restaurants are popular with Millennials. No shit. And if they have to die so be it. They're too posh to exist in the current economy. Sorry.

You are RIGHT in the middle of the millennial bracket I'm afraid. I was born in 1981 and it's arguable if I am a millennial or not. Some sources say I am millennial, others say I am GenX. But you? Yea you are definitely a millennial. You are part of that generation 100%. You are well, well within the bracket. Right in the middle.
