People don't think of religious texts that way generally. Most educated religious people see them as the accumulated moral knowledge of our cultural forebearers. As in they don't derive their moral knowledge or ethical models from the book in isolation, but rather believe that something so enduring must have validity in its precepts because so much time and accumulated wisdom was concentrated into the ethical model presented. Whether the central tenants the text is built upon are divine is left up to the individuals perception of what is divine which is something no one ever seems to decide with any finality.

The populace you talk about are just not very smart and there isn't much they could have ever done about that. IQ is very genetically determined and complaining that Mexicans just converted their pagan religious practices into making the saints demi gods and praying for gifts in exchange for literal food offerings doesn't show a lot of consideration for the reality of their limited capacity for philosophical searching. It's like when those embarrassing fedora style atheists blame all suffering on religion, they're just being carried along by a piece of Marxist ideology they picked up second or third hand off the internet.
