I started with reducing the amount of video game genres I played. I used to play action games, RPGs - just about everything. I picked the few genres that combined two elements as equally as possible: fun & no waste of time.
RPGs were fun. But with their massive amount of grinding, role-playing and so on, they were a waste of time. Online FPSs were a small waste of time, but I didn't enjoy them as much. For me GTA was the perfect combo so I just played that. It was already a reduction of play time from 6 to 3 hours a day.

I also stopped reading video game news and buying new games. I would then proceed to actively reduce play time to 2 hours. After one month I just got bored. It simply worked for me.

The thing is, when you are used to something and you quit it, you feel like you're missing out on something. But that's not true. I for example never watched movies. Hell, I have no idea what's running in theatres right now. Does it bother me? No. Same with video games. I just don't care about them anymore. I recently started refreshing my knowledge about them, I know what new games are being released and so on. But I have no interest in checking them out. So it worked for me.

I was always pretty awkward in my teens and would just stay home playing halo all day. I was drunk one night and someone I barely knew offered me some acid if I hung out with them for the night so I did that, ended up loving just being social for a change and could never go back to vidya.
