I think a huge part of it is that he didn't want to be an adult; he wanted to be a teenager forever, as mentioned in his journals. The thing is though is that it was fine and probably encouraged when he was young, but as he got older people's expectations of him changed and what made him cool and interesting is suddenly labeling him as a loser and putting him at odds with everyone.

He tried to make a gamble at being a YouTube star so that he could afford this lifestyle, but it didn't pan out. He started losing his hair too, basically being forced to grow up whether he liked it or not.

The things he used for maintaining this identity were being taken away from him. With nothing to fall back on and basically not investing in a backup plan, he just snapped and murdered people in a rage.
