Why are there so many well armed militias in the US?

Cause the founding of this country, in order to ensure the people were free, the citizenry was intended to be armed and trained to fight off invaders and their own government if necessary. A step above this instead of individual citizens just being able to up and go in an emergency, is organizing groups more capable to fight: a militia.

Unfortunately the modern "militia" is more of a LARPing group of folks that just want to pretend they're in the formal government military and suck the governments cock.

large firepower like warthogs for example are very very usefoul vs an organized country with builded defenses/ofense(it can be artillery, antiair etc) but the moment you want to control a country you need to enforce a police controlled state, with curfews and basically shooting every civillian on sight that breakes any law.
now if the population of your country is retarded and with no guns you are good, look at the soviets.
