Written Portuguese and Spanish can be understood by both countries but it's really difficult for Spanish speakers to understand Portuguese. Whereas it's not as difficult for Portuguese speakers to understand spanish.

Poortuguese has a lot of nasal inflections and vowel sounds that aren't used at all in Spanish. To give you an idea, Spanish uses 5 or 6 vowel sounds whereas Portuguese has 12-13 distinct sounds.

Typical American.

There are huge cultural, historical and social barriers between Portugal and Spain. The language is also quite different.

Spain is a made up country that will cease to exist in its current form in less than 50 years, they have no national identity, no homogenous culture and ethnicity.

Meanwhile portugal is Portuguese with a single language and a single culture and has been so for almost a thousand years when Spain was still just a bunch of faggots in several kingdoms killing each other and getting their asses kicked by portugal.

The pronunciation is very different.
It's very hard to understand a Portuguese/Brazilian person speaking without knowing their language. Yes, when you write it down it seems closer, but in spoken form it is nigh impossible to understand.

Hell, even between different Spanish countries it's different enough. The slang is different, many words are different, the accent is different. I can barely understand Chileans or Mexicans, you need to ask them to speak slowly and avoid using slang. (And the other way around too)
