John William Godward

> Godward was born in 1861 and lived in Wilton Grove, Wimbledon. He was born to Sarah Eboral and John Godward (an investment clerk at the Law Life Assurance Society, London).[2](pp17–19) He was the eldest of five children. He was named after his father John and grandfather William. He was christened at St. Mary's Church in Battersea on 17 October 1861. The overbearing attitude of his parents made him reclusive and shy later in adulthood.

>He was a protégé of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, but his style of painting fell out of favour with the arrival of painters such as Picasso. He committed suicide at the age of 61 and is said to have written in his suicide note that "the world is not big enough for myself and a Picasso".[1]

> His already estranged family, who had disapproved of his becoming an artist, were ashamed of his suicide and burned his papers. No photographs of Godward are known to survive.

>"Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm contemplating the corpse of general Abel Douay" (GER: "Kronprinz Friedrich Wilhelm an der Leiche des Generals Abel Douay") by Anton von Werner (9th of May 1843 - 4th of January 1915), created: 1. January 1888.

This painting shows Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich Willhelm III. and other Prussian officers paying their respect to the corps of French General Abel Douay during the Franco-Prussian War. General Douay was ordered to take his 2. Division to a highly exposed position near Weißenburg. They arrived at the third of August 1870 and were surprised by the German Third Army lead by the Crown Prince at dawn of the fourth. They had taken position on a hill when Duoay was killed during the adjustment of a Mitrailleuse (a French grapeshot cannon, sort of like an oversized shotgun). General Douay became known in Germany because of this painting.

Hard to say, depends on the era of the Roman Empire. A better question would be, what countries would side with the Roman Empire, not the other way around, considering so many laid claim to being their successors.

It would likely come down to the type of emperor was in charge, Augustus, Caracalla, etc., would likely not have done the same thing.

>They'd still try to conquer Germany of course
They never really tried to conquer Germania. Even going back to Marius and the Jutes, the Romans did not consider the region to be worth conquering due to lack of resources and riches.

Even in the time of Augustus, Teutoburg Forest was not considered a big loss, in terms of overall goals, more of a blunder.

When Goths got uppity, Romans just went into Germania and slashed and burned everything, then went home.

This is the same argument people use with the Parthians, but people forget that Rome sacked their capitol fives times (Ctesiphon), won almost every battle, occupied Mesopotamia, and withdrew, as they didn't feel it was worth the hassle.

Well I guess i kinda learned a different perspective in school. I was told that Augustus was so devastated by the loss of his whole legion led by Varus that the Romans stopped all their plans of conquering Germania for decades to come.
>>
>>129494152
The Romans would likely side against the Germans and Ottomans, especially, for a number of reasons. Gaul (France) has always had a good relation with Italy since Charlamagne, and Russia considered itself the third Rome at the time. So, probably not.

Also Fascism was a mid-twentieth century Italian concept and wasn't a thing in WW1 or ever before.

Nah, Augustus really didn't care, no one in Rome did for the most part. Check out Augustus, by Adrian Goldsworthy (or anything by him). He is the standard on on Rome and the best writer I have ever come across for that subject.

The Jutes that Marius faced were the best Rome had faced, in terms or Germania aggression, and was a really underrated time going on. It got so serious that Rome had to have military reforms and start a proper professional army of paid soldiers, hence, the Marian Reforms. Up until that point, they were all levies, a militia. Not even Hannibal caused enough havoc to cause a military reform.

There are still artists very well trained and skilful today who make impressive art.
Are you sure you're not getting the vibe from the historical value of the pieces, instead of the actual technique ?
I'm not saying it makes these paintings any less incredible but I have an intuition most of the awe that I get from some comes mainly from the "looking way back" thing.
Your phrase read a bit like "- depressed knowing we'll never have 1800's photographs ever made again."

I had the "luxury" of staying in a loft above an art gallery for a few days. Most was post modern expressionist. I have also had the luxury of just sitting in a master painters house, and his studio to see beautiful pieces before they were finished.

Whenever these threads come up I almost weep for western civilization. These pieces landmark the evolution of westerners, its marked by love, war, death, peace, faith, ingenuity, and self reflection.

Then I go back to the modern art I saw, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, and die a little inside.

/pol/ these are the moments where you shine. In these dark times of rampant shilling, and skinhead larping, these paintings exemplify what makes the west great. There are no statistics, no conjecture, just see for yourself. We should make these a daily dump, they are political, and FAR more powerful than some of the stupid shit on this board. Keep the memes, they are the future, but reflect on the past as well.

>>129504616
you're correct! If you keep your eyes open, the painting you linked, Las Meninas by Velasquez, is one of the most influential paintings of all time, mostly for that trope where the subjects stare back at you. A lot of the ones I posted of women staring back at you are partly inspired by it as an example.

And I am an artist who double-majored in art and art history in college. Beyond what I learned in college, I'll read books like you said.

If you can take paintings you like here and reverse-google search them, you can find out who painted them, when they were made, where they were made, and the era that art historians classify them in today (like Baroque, Renaissance, Rococo, Impressionist, etc)

You can learn a lot by finding books or online lectures about particular eras or artists.

Khan Academy probably would be a great start to get primed before digging deep into the lingo of art history texts (although most are made for a general audience so you shouldn't be scared) https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/art-history

i like it actually. the scope of what an artist is is incredibly broad today.

Artists ever since the renaissance (even all the way back to the 1500s with the Baroque) have been trying to broaden what is allowed in art because they feel restricted by the rules. Subject matter, painting style, and even audience were very restricted.

You may not realize it, but there are a broad range of styles of painting in this thread and a lot of them were very controversial when they first hit the scene. You can't really sum this up as classical vs modern/post-modern/contemporary.

Now, I think we've gotten closer to true freedom of expression than ever. And even if it means I'm sharing a gallery with wacko silly stuff, that means that the kind of work I make myself has even more creative power since I chose to make what I make instead of the wacko stuff. I can make art that is truly my own and isn't subject to any set standards on what art should or shouldn't be. (plus I kinda like the wacko stuff too because it's hilarious seeing people get angry about it)
As for what I make, I do some painting, some drawing, and comics because I'm a dork. I'm big into post-impressionists so my paintings and drawings are similar to their stuff.

I love picasso's studies of "classic" works of art. They're pretty wild.

For reference, here's another one he did of Las Meninas, the same painting. He did like 30 and it's fascinating seeing him trying to understand each painting in different styles.

Now that you mention it I can see that being true, although I never heard it said before now. They definitely are super into Van Gogh. Kinda makes the whole appropriation going on with the late 19th cent painters kinda ripping off Japanese art less morally messy if Japanese people themselves are into it.

for fun here's a Kurosawa short film about him dreaming of meeting Van Gogh (played by Martin Scorsese of all people)

I have been married before. I was actually married to a beautiful woman. She was a different kind of beauty, less slim, with bigger hips, and breasts, but with similar delicate facial features.

I was so in love with her but she hurt me so much and so I hurt her as well.

We were a terrible match.

She divorced me 2 years ago and I still dream about her almost everyday.

Difference being, it does not hurt anymore. I wake up with a smile and carry on with my day.

Still, would love to have a family someday with another woman just as beautiful.

But I know that it won't happen.

Thank you for your kindness, anon.

As most polacks here, I am a very jaded man that has as little contact as possible with normies.

I see the destruction of beauty everyday in our world.

I come to /pol everyday just to confirm that things have not changed, nor they will change; things will get worse down the road.

and yet I come to these art threads and see the beautiful women, the children, the landscape, and it resonates with the sublime in my soul, makes me yearn for culture, community, homeland and a sense of belonging that's almost gone forever nowadays.

threads like this one remind me that despite how senseless life is, there is a glimmer of hope as long as we are alive, as long as we can, at the very least, change of our own lives while the entire world goes to hell.

sometimes you remind me that there's a bit of hope, /pol.

egypt obviously has a remarkable art history, and western art is in severe debt to it because greek art and architecture builds directly off of the Egyptians

African historically has had purposes that are completely independent of western art. It usually is religious tools, like masks or thrones. Or textiles. The Benin Bronzes are pretty famous examples of bronze sculpture. And there's a lot of fascinating christian art and architecture from Ethiopia, like these churches that were constructed by carving the ground while digging downward. Extremely painstaking but a beautiful end-result.

You really can't compare their stuff to Western art because they weren't trying to make things the way western artists were and western artists weren't trying to be like African artists (until the early 20th century with people like Picasso discovering african art and ripping it off)

Female artists are difficult to research because a lot of them have been erased from history. There are many examples of works of art made by female artists being assumed to have been made by their male instructors until historians found proof of the truth. And a lot of traditionally female artistry in stuff like fashion and fabric work haven't gotten the kind of respect in art history compared to the male-dominated counterparts.

that said, in the 19th and 20th and 21st century i could totally give a looooong laundry list of important woman artists because we don't have as much of a historical fog over it, and the feminist movement has allowed more woman artists to come into prominence.

With how wretched and ugly things are nowadays, it almost seems like it's our noble duty to try and make the world more beautiful

this seems to go along with Jordan Peterson's idea of cleaning your room. You clean it and then you beautify it. You make the world more beautiful in some small way that's possible for you. And then maybe you go outside and try to make some little part of the world more beautiful too. You don't necessarily have to be an artist.

Just a thought, at least

It's by Henri de Toulouse Lautrec. Part of a series of paintings he did of these two women in bed and kissing and sleeping.

A pretty fucking fascinating artist. Was only 5 feet tall because of a bone disorder but loved fucking women, and even lived in a brothel for a while. He was close with the Moulin Rouge, which was a cabaret theater with risque performances (the can-can is from here).

I believe the woman on the top is Cha-U-Kao, a lesbian clownesse who was a friend with Lautrec. Here's another pic of her (on the right) dancing with a woman. Lautrec, as a crazy cassanova, was pretty open sexual and ironically was a bit ahead of his time being open to lesbianism and stuff like that.

I'll reply to this with an painting of his of Cha-U-Kao in her clown outfit

I think those painters often used the same models over and over. They often had favorites that they used a lot, I think the woman in that portrait shows up in lots of his painting. So that's partly why many painters seem to paint the same faces over and over again, they actually are painting the same people much of the time.

Godward is excellent by the way, amazing painter.
