Why are there so many women in Biology? Unlike psychology it's a real, hard science. According to /pol/ women avoid real science. Pls explain.

Sure, they become vets but biology is mainly studying cells in a lab.

It's softer than Chemistry, which is softer than physics, which is softer than engineering or mathematics.
Women chose the softest possible option among the real practical or applied sciences.

Because feminists think that hard sciences are privileged over soft a well defined and structured science is problematic because they can't be wrong and still say their method works

Biology isn't sacred from social justice here in America. Teachers at my university couldn't even teach you about how "1 chromosome comes from mom, 1 chromosome comes from dad" when referring to diploidy. Professor had to use gender-neutral pronouns and mistakenly implied that the chromosomes are equal in every way (accidentally suggesting incest, based on your interpretation)

>I wasn't sure of the correct order regarding the two, I counted on the fact that physics includes quantum mechanics which is unknown, fuzzy and strange, I guess probability is hard, but the fuzziness is soft, hence the order that I went with.
I wouldn't really say «fuzzy» means it's soft, quantum mechanics requires a fair bit of abstract thinking, unless you're simply talking memes, which is like the whole "i love science" meme - oh hey, did you know the double slit -- yeah, not a complex thing, but the phenomenons behind it are more complex. So I'd say the thing with quantum mechanics is that, like all science, it's been dumbed down in presentation by and for the masses, but actual quantum mechanics I wouldn't call soft.

Reminds me I should really start digging into the quantum mechanics problem textbook thing I bought.

I'm a college student today, and Biology classes in general are a joke. In microbiology classes, we have to deal with case studies from real patients and memorize every step in the pathways for coagulation, immune response, etc.

One semester, I took molecular biology for the shits and giggles (class goes into genetics for biology students). Entire class was full of morons who didn't know basic shit. (EDTA is a chelator, PCR, etc). It was horrifying that most of them wanted to become doctors after college.
>>
biomedical studies are hard because you might end up talking to patients. this is not POL's strongest point :^)
>>
>>129461783
That's what happens when you go to a shit-tier university. You get grouped with a bunch of retards. That's not because women are dumb. Rosalind Franklin did X-ray crystallography studies, those are a little bit harder than memorizing that EDTA is a chelating agent

12 years of studies and testing before approval, get fucked. no 'biologist' is making medicine anymore.

much like your favorite video game/movie franchise, giant mega corporations simply go through the motions of slightly modifying existing drugs from the 50s-80s in order to create 'new' drugs so they can charge more and protect their profits.
>>
>>129461783
>It was horrifying that most of them wanted to become doctors after college.

when you realize being a doctor is nothing more than rote memorization, comparing symptoms with a check list, dumping all your problem on slave-nurses, and prescribing the medication your hospital's insurance partners want you to, you suddenly realize being a doctor isn't that amazing or something you should respect.

I work in science. My background is in chemistry and pharmacology. The continued presence of this "women in STEM" meme has always baffled me - the majority of undergraduate and postgraduate students in the life sciences are women. There is a fall-away with age, but this is obviously related to motherhood. So many lose interest in competing within their field when children come along. Their male counterparts, on the other hand, continue publishing and building a reputation.
>>
>>129458628

When I last had biology courses, It was the only scientific topic I had pretty shit ratings in, barely above average while I was minimum top 3 of my class in math, physics chemistry etc.
Biology teachers were always female and grades were more about how well written and expanded answers were than about exactitude.
My impression was that it was not more scientific than geography or history.

maybe it changes in college but up to highschool it's bullshit, so I'm not surprised.

I feel you got a very poor understanding of how studies in the social sciences work, because they also aim for 100% accuracy and being reproducable, it's like you think people just throw random ideas at a wall with no regards for the scientific method, but the work on they same principle of being build on a foundation of irrefutable proof that biology for example is. Of course there is bad apples who practice bad science, but there are in any field and social sciences are not any more prone to it than when, I don't know, physicists are confident they're proving the world is flat and global warming is a hoax

>2 reasons

#1. I'd say females are naturally inclined towards life sciences because they have this predisposition of wanting to care of living things. Medicine, animals, biochemistry, disease, etc etc. all can eventually lead to either 1 on 1 care-giving and advice (nurses, genetic counselors) or indirect care-giving (the several decades it takes to produce a genetic or molecular therapy). Males on the other hand are probably predisposed toward machines, objects, non-living systems, and the non-sociological abstract realm

#2
For softer biologies (some psychology branches, some field ecology) theories are more intuitive and females generally have a brain wired for intuition and scoping out hidden truths (if its a high IQ female they might even be onto something, mid IQ or lower and they're wasting taxpayer resources) while males have a brain built for sequential precise logic and truths

I am a Doctor of Microbiology, I have noticed a number of problems with women working in Biological sciences.

Inability to for hypothesis.
>This is at the very center of science. However, only a hand full of women seem to be able to do form or understand what a hypothesis beyond a simply dictionary definition. I would estimate 10-15% of women, and 50-60% of men in the field can do this. Those who cannot do this never rise above research associate and for the most part are glorified technicians who rely on others to interrupt their data and give experimental planing.

Inability to plan for or interpret the unknown.
>Again, on the glorified technician path, I have seen many more women than men fall into the pattern of failure. When an experiment does not work, they simply repeat it over and over again. I have had women graduate students repeat failure with the same contaminated sample for a year and never went back to think why things might not be working. Additionally, I always went over my experimental design with colleagues to confirm I had every control in place. So many times I have asked women presenting their data about major controls, which they did not even think to do.

Time spent working.

>I have noticed in general women spend about 20% more time working than men, but again they rarely plan more than one experiment at a time. I would always have everything down to the amount of liquid I pippet planned out before I even started. Women will continuously do experiments then they realize halfway through there is a major problem. I saw one woman spent 5 months working on a set of experiments only to come to the conclusion that the drug was not soluble in water anywhere near the concentration she needed, then she continued to perform the experiment with insoluble drug suspended in water.

I am not saying that all women are terrible at science, some of the best scientist I know are women. But, the bell curve is shifted from logical thinking and planing.

Problem is univeristies gave all the power to students now as before failing a student was simple. Even if i presented that someone clearly didnt understand or learn anything in the lab they could still argue to a third party that they did enough to pass. Univeristies are built to keep students from failing out instead of the other way around. Students should be challenged instead of nurtured imo. Id say at least 30% of students ive taught that passed the labs should have been forced to change majors or dropout

>>
>>129475310

Let me see, I will try to explain this.

No hypothesis stated, but from the title they are comparing liver cells from rats and humans.

The paper in the bottom left is two power tests to determine approximately what degree of difference they can observe. Not sure why there are two, unless they are testing for the power to detect say a 10% and 20% difference.

On the graphs, Cells per Length is not a measurement I have seen, I can assume they did line measurement instead of total cells or cells per mm2. The left is rat, the right is human. I am not sure what number of cells in mm is, I can assume it is the number of cells they counted in 1 mm, than the circumference of the cells? Such an odd relationship to compare. The cell diameter would tell you both, what they are essentially plotting is the error in their measurement, nothing more. Below the graphs is just a linear regression.

The images are just confocal light microscope images of cells growing in a dish. The colored image looks like an HE stain of some liver tissue. I doubt they did it and just got it from the internet.
>>
>>129478913
Learn SQL. Running datasets through a regression algorithm in R is easy enough, understanding complex data structures and being able to extract it from a database is where the real value is.

Anything that ends in 'ology' isn't science. Therefore women go into it. Ology just means 'the study of' and while ologies may use the scientific method, they are not sciences because they violate some core principal of science like objectivity, or reproducability.

Consider the following list as an example:
Chemistry - Science.
Physics - Science.
Astronomy - Science.
Mathematics - Truth.
Computer Science - Science.
Psychology - Feelings.
Sociology - 51 genders.
Meteorology - Guessing about weather.
Climatology - Pretending computer models are reality.
Archaeology - Guessing about dead people.

Biology isn't science. Its applied statistics. Broadly speaking 'Biology' houses some actual sciences such as genetics (no ology) or Bio chemistry (which is regular chemistry with some of the chemicals removed) but women do NOT OFTEN DO THESE FIELDS. They are hard, require math, and force you to use computers to stare at complex datasets. Most people go into biology proper to hug trees, cuddle with animals, and go on long nature walks and get paid for it. This is why women do biology. It is NOT a 'hard' science and I resent having my actual hard science sullied with the likes of biology.

Write down every database technology you worked with as a skill, throw in a couple reporting tools, you can get a job. People claiming to be "SQL Experts" out there can barely write a query and just use tools to write stuff for them; when those tools break and you need to fix the underlying SQL, they run around like chickens with their heads cut off. Microbiology and pharamacology are just applied or extensions of regular biology and by definition are not sciences.

Genetics is not an ology. as described in my post it is one of the actual scientific outgrowths of biology in the same way that edible food grows out of dirt and shit.

Geology is not reproducible. While they have good ideas, and they may even be right the difficulty with geology is that you can't directly observe geology. It deals with timescales we can't even fathom. Most of what we do know about Geology comes form chemistry anyway. Its kind of like Chemistry's slower, more boring brother. I might MIGHT be convinced that its the only ology that's an actual science.

fine, applied chemistry. Not a science. Applied science isn't science. If it were, engineering would be a science, its not, its applied physics and chemistry.

I'm a fish biologist, it's a pretty good discipline, however, women MOSTLY stick to the soft side of it. When you see people going out and getting all of the data and doing the intense field work needed for any real type of analysis, it's men. Women tend more towards the purely political/theoretical side of this discipline, when you tell them they have to go run out in the bushes and hike for 5 miles or crash boats around on the ocean to get the data, they usually shy away. There's a few hardcore sluts out here, however, most of them are paper biologists.

I'm biology for pre-med.

How do I rate? Most women I know in biology get subpar grades. C's and B's. I've known maybe 2 women who have higher than a 3.7.

This just radiates unfiltered butthurt, did whoever make this get bullied by someone who became an engineer? Like, fuck, it's not even that hard to make *good* deprecating jokes about engineers, but just turning everything into "lol they're gay" joke is infuriatingly dumb.

Like it doesn't even help that these were posted 1 minute apart, which just proves this was an autoposting samefag with no imagination.

No kidding, lots of affirmative action students. Some only had BA in nutrition, another had a BA in medieval history. I studied synthetic biology, applied genetic engineering where we were rebuilding ecoli from the ground up, and these idiots studied macronutrients for four years. I cut my losses at the one $20k semester. Unfortunately job prospects are terrible and after managing a vet anatomy lab or 2 years I think I may go military. My job was quite literally that of igor.

Over two-thirds of my graduating class in biology were girls. It's one of the few science fields that was lauded by the university for being 'progressive' and properly empowering women. Thing is, if you actually break down what the girls chose to focus on vs. guys, you'll see a big difference in the bio-mathematics courses (dominated by guys) and the field work courses (dominated by girls).

So even within biology there's still a tendency for guys to favour the 'hard' science aspects and the girls to favour the 'soft' studies.

Women are both mentally and physically inferior than man on average. It comes to no surprise that women are not doing the hard sciences. I've done math, physics, biology and chemistry at uni and found that in terms of difficulty, pure math > physics > applied math > chemistry > biology. Just so happen, the number of girls decreases in that order.

I'm an EE major (4th year) and at this point there are very few women, but the ones that have made it this far are legit. No coddling by the Uni itself, although the thousands of greasy beta nerds will give out their homework for free to any female that's even remotely attractive at all.

The real lesson is that if you're a woman in STEM you have to be smart to make it, but can avoid doing a lot of work because autists cant into females
>>
It's not a matter of what women avoid and where they go. They just can't compete with men at desirable or lucrative occupations. It seems biology is neither.

Biochemistry degree programs today are what biology degrees should be. Biology degrees are just a mumbo jumbo cocktail from conservation to zoology to cell biology to biochemistry. Too many broad fields jammed into one degree which amounts to fuck all in the end. Because hard science requires math.

I taught math and calculus at a prominent engineering university. Very small female population, maybe 10-15% overall. They opened a special section of math just for the biology majors, changed the requirements to make it easier in a few respects. Enrollment was over 85% female.

Because it tends to be a latter degree. Most women in biology go on to veterinary or medical sciences. It's also contains the least amount of math in the sciences which most women tend to be shit at.

I have a Biology degree, but it's because I'm lazy and my natural I.Q. isn't high enough to go into the more complex sciences without studying. All the humanities/literature etc degrees where way to fucking boring. For me Biology hit the sweet spot.

That said it's a waste of time and money. It took me four years to pay off that shit. Tech schools are the way to go.
