The EU is attempting to make Brexit more expensive for the UK to leave instead of what it would cost them for the "foreseeable" future.
It's mostly posturing though because the EU will not be able to sustain with Brexit, and with Eastern Europe getting rightfully uppity about immigration, the EU cannot afford to look weak.
Just imagine if they had an army, my God.

This is simply the EU trying to deflect away from the fact that we should be taking money from them.

Keep in mind that when a separation occurs you divide up assets, the EU has far more of our money in assets than we have of theirs. If anything we're owed money.

They must make sure other member states do not leave. Brexit put a huge dent in their plans so they want to punish the UK as much as they can in order to ensure other member states stay in line because the Germans are, yet again, trying to conquer/ruin Europe, only this time they want to do it in the most opposite way possible: Becoming a leftist shithole that hates whites and dominates/controls through fear by allowing terrorists and extremists into every country to bomb the shit out of people and run them down with trucks. This way, they can easily manipulate every member state in order to keep them in line.

The UK wanted away from that, so with Brexit winning, it makes them look weak and incapable of controlling their member states, so they must do as much as they can to ruin the UK in order to punish them to send a message to others that its okay to leave or ignore their demands. If the member states had any sense left, they'd leave too or form their own Union cutting Germany, France, and other cucked member states out of the deal so they can take in all the terrorists they've set loose on Europe.
>>
>>129447800
sometimes i forget the low IQ of the American right is not a meme
>>
>>129446056
It actually isn't. The UK isn't obligated to pay a god damn thing since we've spent decades investing money into the EU, and have paid our dues, moreso than many other EU member states.

But it's in the interests of the EU to make leaving look as terrible and costly as possible in order to deter other nations from leaving. Like it or not, the UK is going to get bruised leaving because otherwise the EU looks weak.

America didn't lose the Vietnam War. They won, voluntarily handed over the country to the Viets, and left. They signed an agreement saying they would continue to supply the South Viets. Yes, but the thing is:

Instead of looking at Britain's agreed NET contributions they are looking at its GROSS contributions.

The difference is enormous, and it would make everyone at the EU insanely rich if they can pull this off (which they can't) because they can just keep all the money they would normally have to spend on Britain.

Just so non-Europeans know, in case they believe there is a legitimate basis for these demands.

There is nothing in law, nothing at all in the wording of any treaty that the UK has signed nor any regulation or directive that the EU has put out, that says that there is an exit fee for leaving the European Union.

Article 50, the piece of EU legislation that is used to leave the EU, is deliberately sparse and retardedly drafted. Nobody ever expected anyone to use it. They could not imagine an enlightened western democracy ever pulling out of their bloated, inefficient bureaucracy. They honestly think that integration under a European superstate is the only way to stop wars on the continent, conveniently forgetting that it has only ever been NATO and the United States that has stopped the continent from descending into war and not their silly union.

>The terms of the contracts have changed
If they already agreed to pay future fees in the past, they should settle those.
If you sign a rent contract for 12 months, and then on the 9th month you decide to move out, you still have to pay for the remaining three, or at least reach a settlement with the landlord, since he now has a loss of income due to you not respecting the terms of the contract.

Topkek, no it wouldn't.
We still have the ability to pay, we just choose not to. And we're not choosing to not pay private banks or other institutions which would buy our bonds; we are choosing not to pay a bureaucracy that is taking the piss.

That's not how government bonds work though.

The government doesn't know who owns which bonds. (because they get traded between investors constantly).
So they can't selectively choose which investors not to pay back - they would have to not pay anyone which also includes a lot of British citizens and pensioners.

The EU is in a tough situation.

Eastern Europe is going to become blacked, because the EU wills it, and that will require extra billions to deal with the terrorist threat once it is spread across the entire European continent and not just Western Europe. Both for monitoring terrorists and for providing education programs etc. in Eastern Europe for the new migrants.
And at the same time the UK is leaving. So they need lots of money now for their future problems above.

On the positive side, once an EU military is on the go, the EU countries can spend less on their military but pool it all together and coordinate for more effectiveness in things like rescuing migrants and bringing them to Europe or removing leaders who are preventing mass migration into Europe like Gaddafi or Assad.

If they don't reach an agreement on the payment of previous dues, the EU beurocrats will simply decide to put trade restrictions on UK, and given the strong interconnection of the UK economy with the EU (expecially the Netherlands, see all those companies based in both countries), i don't think the UK is willing to risk that.
I also severely doubt any UK politician would be dumb enough to threathen the use of nuclear force to any economic measure taken by EU countries, given that France also has a nuclear arsenal.

Perhaps what you consider a contract is different from what we consider a contract.

Here, the only way you can get damages from the other side is in the event of breaching a term in the contract that is explicitly written into it.

The UK has been paying into a big central pot that the Commission has total control over. The UK has not "contracted" with any third party like French farmers or Polish construction companies. There is nothing that says anything about Britain paying any reparations in any legislation put out by the EU or in any agreements signed with the EU by the UK government.

Ergo one can conclude that those "reparations" have no basis in fact and are fantasyland threats designed to show how hard the EU is going to be in talks, which will lead to the UK washing its hands of the whole thing and going full off-shore tax haven without paying a single bean to the European Commission.

The reason most of the banks and financial institutions are here is not, despite popular belief, because we're a "gateway to the EU" or whatever. It's because we have the English legal system, the most certain and therefore business friendly legal system on the planet.

Many big businesses will not go to France or Germany because they cuckold ideas in their law such as the need for sides to negotiate in good faith. The English legal system is cutthroat and loved by business all over the world.

Massive insurance and shipping firms in Singapore use English law, not to mention half the Middle East and China.

Exports are beneficial mainly to the exporter, not the consumer, since the cash is flowing in the opposite direction to the good/service.

Exports mean cash is flowing into our country from Europe. It maintains our high GDP and good balance of payments.

The actual physical goods we export don't matter because consumers in Europe can just switch to other ones.

So we have the power to dent 8% of EU exports in a trade war, whereas they can dent 50% of ours.

Economically it hurts both sides. The UK economy loses out because suddenly things become more expensive for half their customers. It doesn't cost it to leave.

The "cost" is to have access to custom free trade through the EU, as well as being able to trade with the EU.

(it is, admittedly, an entirely arbitrary figure, but it's one that you'd calculate relative to the amount of money the UK makes from the service they're paying the EU to let them have. And also the pound keeps falling so the price keeps increasing, obviously)

>>129446303
>>129472309

Okay so almost all trade the UK does goes through the channel tunnel, not the seaports - if the UK wants to get goods to the US, they move it overland via rail to portugal before it hits the seas (shaves about a week off journey times), if they want to trade with asia, they move the goods overland to Turkey before it hits the sea (shaves about a month off travel).

That's before the issue of "once we're outside the EU, do we get to have our goods travel through the EU without being constantly delayed with custom checks"

Basically the UK is a fetus trying to negotiate with its mother not to abort us, after demanding that she abort us.
