My guess.

Something made the Earth shift it's rotating axis, magnetic pole swap, massive earthquake, asteroid hit.

The shift caused the North and South pole to now be in new spot that used to be closer to and warmer near the equator.

Civilization at the new Poles were preserved under ice while evidence of civilization exposed to the elements elsewhere is washed away. (unless it was also buried like in Ancient Egypt)
