There is a great book called "American Prometheus" about Oppenheimer and the Manhattan project.

It's like 50% biography, 30% manhattan project, 10% geopolitics, and 10% military history.

Oppenheimer was cray as fuck, literally made cyanide and poisoned an apple to kill his gradeschool teacher with. He married a lesbian, they had threesomes, he was paranoid as fuck. He didn't do it all by himself either, while he worked at a shitty government clerk job at the patent office, he had a lot of time to think. On his lunch breaks he would walk around trying to visualize space/gravity/light in his head. It's proven that walking stimulates thought.

After work he met with leading PhD students in his field and professors and they worked together for a few hours. You can only become an expert by learning from other experts, nobody does it alone.

Eventually through working with a team, and combined with his ample free time from his easy gov job he was able to write his breakthroughs. Notice afterwards he was given prestigious professor positions and then the bulk of his work stopped because he had no more time for research, he spent all his time preparing curriculum, preparing exams, tutoring understudies, having a family ect. I would say Einstein was smart but if you want the tautological representation of genius it would be people like John von Neumann.

Isaac Newton was different in that he would teach himself up to a certain level, meet with fellow people, be unsatisfied with his understanding of something and then reteach himself from the ground up to meet with them later (like a year later). He was famous for starting Descartes Analytic Geometry text and working until he couldn't understand something, then starting all over again, progressing some more, stopping and restarting ect. He read single pages in books like 40-50 times.

Newton also hated the media, and scientific reviewers at the time that he made his work so advanced that no layman could possibly understand it in order to silence bullshit smear campaigns and bike shedding criticism. Only other top mathematicians were able to grok his shit.
