The story of Jesus as recorded in the gospels is about what happens when the Spirit of God appears on Earth, and is resisted by the worldly powers of organized religion and the state. Anytime the message of Christ becomes co-opted by religious doctrine or state power, it has already abandoned its roots, since at its core the Jesus story is about how those very powers will stop at nothing to subvert and destroy the Christ. Though of course they can never succeed - to those with eyes to see and ears to hear, the King remains enthroned.

Christ shows us that self-giving sacrificial love is the true power in the universe, not the top-down tyrannical brute strength of Caesar. Christ's earliest followers proclaimed "Jesus is Lord!", rather than "Caesar is Lord!" which regions conquered by the empire were required to say. The implied subversive question - who is making a better Kingdom? Caesar who puts people on crosses, or Christ who bears the cross in love for all? Caesar who dominates and kills all who oppose with brute strength, or God who raised Christ from the dead?

Why is self-giving sacrifice the ultimate power? Picture water. In some senses, the most submissive substance imaginable. It will flow through your fingers, fit any container you put it in. Yet nothing can compete with it for domination of the planet - it covers 70% of Earth's surface. It uses its power not to dominate like a tyrant, but to quietly nourish each and every thing that lives. This is built into Creation as a prefiguration of Christ. The blood of Christ is spiritual water, and those who drink of it will never thirst again.

Nothing in the Old Testament Scriptures, the only Scriptures that Peter had at the time, implied that this decision was righteous or correct. But Peter listened to the voice of God and did it anyway.

The real question is: do they condemn sodomy, sexual promiscuity and bodily mutilation? These are the chief sins which tend to afflict the transgendered, not being transgendered itself.

I'm a lapsed catholic, fell out of Christianity into secularism although I held a certain devotion the entire time. I'm finding that all of the paths I take into philosophy, theology or pursuit of the good life in general lead me back towards Christ and I've discovered that I should reaffirm my belonging to the Church.

I'm baptized and have taken the Eucharist but never got confirmed.

I haven't read much of the bible so I'm starting today, haven't picked a version yet but I'm having one major problem with my re-entry to the Church which is the concept of the Roman Catholic Church.

If Jesus overthrew the Sadducees and Pharisees to bring God directly to His people, why would Christ's followers need a new hierarchy of theologian leaders?

How can I remedy evolution with the bible. I was finally getting back into Christianity however, is the bible not meant to have divine inspiration? Therefore everything it includes is the truth including the origins of humanity. I personally think the book of Genesis is very metaphorical. So I don't take "garden of eden" any more literally than I can read a copy of the bible in its original language.

But I do think a Brazilian recently pointed out that the verse about God seeing that light was good and separating it from dark was very profound. I hadn't thought about it like that previously. I think this Brazilian is insightful.

I think that everybody is capable of having a connection to God. As such, it is possible that parts of the bible were divinely inspired just like it is possible that Moses brought down commandments after seeing a burning bush, or that Jesus tried to tell everybody to cut the crap and here's how it really is.

It's kind of like the works vs. acts debate. In my personal view, which might be wrong, if you have been touched by God then you will know better what is right.

I would say yes. Orthodoxy has preserved its teachings more accordingly and purely.
Catholicism is somewhat tolerable, as I said, though there are certain things that defied ancient teachings.

There are a lot of churches near me, Orthodox and otherwise. It's one of the reasons I took an interest in different sects and the kinds of people who go to each one.

I'm not going to answer for him, but I think if you are going to the house of God to worship (look that one up from the bible when Jesus went missing as a child) and you don't find excessive fault with it then you're in the right place.

I once went to a [specific church redacted] and it was just pagan bullshit up and down. I would stay home rather than attend there.

Had a similar experience. It was during a super heavy bout of depersonalization or derealization disorder that lasted nearly a year. I literally couldn't convince myself that anything was real, even if I was touching it and it was right in front of my face. It was torturous. I'll say again what I always say. Shop around and find one that speaks to you.

I stick with my gig because I was born in to it and it's close enough and it's part of what defines my family. But if you're out to pick and chose, then you have great opportunity to go with your own preference.

I think probably the best thing in this day and age is small groups of people who actually read and teach Christianity to each other. But maybe there's a big organized church near you that can help you along that path.

Don't prescribe to one specific denomination or group. The biggest issue I had with the Catholic Church is what you just said. Read the Bible and other literature on subjects about the Bible to form your own opinion and beliefs about it that you believe is the closest to the truth. Atleast that's what I do
