Why do police have a monopoly on criminal investigations?

Detectives are the only ones who can investigate crimes like murder. There are a limited amount of detectives and some murders go unsolved and become "cold cases" until either a new lead comes in or some detective decides to take another look at it.

Why should only law enforcement be given access to evidence and be allowed to investigate crimes?

Private citizens should be able to become "licensed independent detectives". Once licensed in the profession, they should be given access to the same evidence the police have on criminal cases and be allowed to investigate crimes to potentially solve them.

Furthermore, the state should also place monetary rewards on criminal cases, where whoever solves a case gets a reward to pay for their work. There should also be monetary rewards for uncovering new evidence and moving a case closer to being solved.

If you think about it, we already do the same thing with bounty hunters. They chase down and capture fugitives and are rewarded for their time and efforts on successful capture. Why can't we do the same thing with criminal investigations?

But then you further incentivize making shit up just to close the case and get your money.

You're incentivizing the wrong things.

Private investigators have to be hired by someone involved in a case in order to investigate it. Most of the time PIs do bullshit like trying to find evidence of infidelity for divorces or they're hired by insurance companies to find evidence of disability fraud.

If you make shit up, you'd lose your license. Also, new evidence would be verified before it's added to the case files.

>Theory #3: The only murders PIs solve are cold cases. Families sometimes get fed up with lack of police involvement/interest and hire PIs to do the investigations.

>Analysis: False that the only murders PIs might solve are cold cases. However, it’s sometimes true that families sometimes get frustrated with police involvement/interest and therefore hire PIs to conduct further investigations. Out of fairness to law enforcement, they often don’t have the manpower or time to handle the overwhelming number of cases that come into their jurisdictions.

>Although not technically private investigators, there was a team of retired, non-commissioned law enforcement officers in Colorado Springs, Colorado who, because of their interest in solving cold cases, were nicknamed, by a sheriff’s department office manager, “The Apple Dumpling Gang” after the bumbling dimwits in the 1975 Disney movie. They were hardly dimwits. These old guys solved one of the deadliest serial murder cold cases in Colorado history.

It's an extreme rarity though. The system I'm talking about, where the state offers rewards/bounties would open up the criminal investigation market to private citizens, creating jobs, and it would lead to more criminal cases being solved, which could potentially save lives in the case of serial killers.
