Like to be more specific there's no muscles devoted to altering the shape of the eyeball. The only thing that moves on your eye that could effect the focus of your vision is constricting your pupils, but this would only work so far and would also reduce the brightness of your vision by the same amount it corrected it.

So while I guess It could be possible that somebody who is slightly vision impaired might be able to train themselves to constrict their pupils it wouldn't help anybody who requires high vision correction.

People become nearsighted because their eyeball becomes elongated. Which places their retina further away from the focal point of the lenses in their eyes. (ideally the light should reach the focal point directly at the retina) It gets worse with age presumably as the tissue in your body loses elasticity, exacerbating the problem. But the eyeball itself reaches full size shortly after puberty. So if it was a growing issue it would stop worsening by the time you were an adult

Like I'm particularly severly nearsighted but I could still fend for myself in close proximity. I couldn't read anything more than 2 feet from me, but that's not really a survival thing.

People who aren't so severely nearsighted can get along just fine by squinting because like I said narrowing the aperture of light increases the width of the focal plane.
